Statement of the Problem
Research is being conducted to examine the availability and effectiveness of support
services for individuals diagnosed with autism in adulthood. Many adults face challenges in
accessing appropriate resources, including formal services like counseling and mental health
support, as well as informal assistance from family and peers. Barriers such as financial
limitations, lack of awareness, and social stigma often prevent individuals from receiving the
help they need. By investigating these experiences, this research aims to identify gaps in existing
support systems and highlight opportunities for improvement, ensuring that adults with autism
receive the necessary resources to enhance their quality of life (Huang et al, 2024).* This study
seeks to answer the following research question:* What are the challenges and gaps in support
services available to individuals diagnosed with autism in adulthood, and how can these services
be improved to better meet their needs?
Methods
This study utilized a mixed-methods approach, collecting both quantitative and
qualitative data simultaneously through a single survey instrument. Participants were recruited
through advertisements placed within organizations that provide services for individuals with
autism. A total of 137 individuals with a prior diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder
participated in the study. Data collection was conducted via an online survey, incorporating
open-ended questions to minimize participant burden and encourage a larger sample size.
Descriptive statistics were employed to summarize key characteristics and identify patterns
within the data. Additionally, researchers applied coding techniques and thematic analysis to
examine participant responses, focusing on their reported real-world experiences (Huang et al,
2024).

Results
The study's findings highlight the significant challenges adults face in accessing support
and services following an autism diagnosis. Key barriers include difficulties in locating and
coordinating services, financial constraints, and a lack of awareness regarding available
resources. Participants also reported struggles with communication, which further hindered their
ability to obtain necessary support. To address these issues, service providers should offer
comprehensive information at the time of diagnosis, including appropriate contacts and
personalized planning assistance from trained professionals. Additionally, providing financial
guidance, streamlining application and referral processes, and increasing access to government
subsidies can help reduce costs and improve service accessibility for individuals diagnosed in
adulthood (Huang et al, 2024).
Reflection
Access to readily available information is crucial for adults diagnosed with Autism
Spectrum Disorder, as it significantly increases their chances of obtaining necessary services and
support. I agree with the study’s findings that numerous barriers hinder access, and continued
research is essential in reducing these obstacles. In Chattanooga, Tennessee, there is an
exceptional facility that provides housing and employment opportunities for adults, helping them
develop life skills, earn an income, and secure stable housing if needed. This facility also fosters
social connections, enhances communication skills, and supports individuals in becoming active
members of society. Expanding awareness of available services, support programs, and financial
assistance is essential to ensuring that more adults with autism can access the resources they
need to thrive.
