What does this teaching method do?
Definition quoted from a source:
Flexible seating provides students with options in different
types of seating. This gives the student a choice when it
comes to where they sit and helps them feel a sense of
control in the class as well as, a place they are comfortable
and will produce better work as a result. Some teachers
provide bean bags, yoga balls, couches, and other forms of
flexible seating.
Definition: Flexible seating is when a student-
centered classroom has a variety of choices (both
locations and seating options) for students to use.
Studies have shown that students process certain
types of learning better using alternative seating
options. (Rebecca, 2024)

Section 2: Information
What do I need to know about this skill/method?
Flexible seating can be done in every classroom. There are multiple types of flexible seating in my classroom including: couch, bean
bag, yoga ball, and chairs that roll. My students love the flexible seating in the classroom, and it has proved to help them remain on
task and focused.
Procedure:
The procedure for flexible seating is to provide different options for seats
in the classroom. This can include yoga balls, a rug, bean bags, a couch,
etc.
EDSP 524
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
The strengths are that every student gets to find the
seat that makes them comfortable and helps them
put their best effort toward the assignments.
I have not found very many weaknesses involving flexible
seating. The only one that I have encountered is students
wanting the same seat.
Why did I choose this strategy?
Where did I encounter this strategy?
I chose flexible seating because it is a strategy that I
use every day in my classroom and one that I have
seen the benefits of using.
I encountered this when I was working as an Exceptional
Children’s TA for 10 years before I became a teacher . I got to
see all the different ways this was utilized, and I knew it was
something I wanted to incorporate in my classroom.
Section 3: Visual, Graphic Organizer or Concept Map
Visual representation of the term/teaching method demonstrating understanding.
Section 4: Analysis and Implementation
In this section, describe how you would utilize this teaching method in your classroom.
Flexible seating is not something that is hard to utilize in the classroom. It all depends on the students and if you think they would
benefit from different forms of seating. Students with IEPs often utilize preferential seating in the classroom, and this could help
achieve that accommodation. In my classroom I have multiple forms of flexible seating including: a bean bag, couch, rolling chairs,
stools, and standing desks. This allows the students to pick where they want to be and where they will perform the best at. This also
gives the student a choice in where they sit. This can give the students a sense of control and make them more at ease when
working. If flexible seating is possible in the classroom, I believe it is a great strategy and will aid in students participation in the
classroom and assignments. I believe it would be a valued form of teaching and will help the student engage better and therefore
perform better.

Section 2: Information
What do I need to know about this skill/method?
Visualization is simply the use of visuals to help students learn the material in a different way. Some students need that visual
representation to be able to understand the material and remember it.
Procedure:
The procedure for utilizing visualization is to find a visual such as: a
picture, video, or experiment to help the students connect to the
material.
EDSP 524
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
The strength of using visualization is that it can help
reach those students who mainly learn through visuals
Visualization is a great teaching strategy for visual
learners, but not all students learn this way. Therefore,
you will need to find other strategies to help reach all the
students, not just the visual learners.
Why did I choose this strategy?
Where did I encounter this strategy?
I chose visualization because I know that I do much
better on work when I can see it or have an example
to go by as oppose to just hearing the instructions. I
know that there are students who are like me who
need that visual to help them. Therefore, I chose
visualization.
As an EC Teacher, I use visualization in my class daily to
reach those visual learners.
Section 3: Visual, Graphic Organizer or Concept Map

EDSP 524
Section 4: Analysis and Implementation
In this section, describe how you would utilize this teaching method in your classroom.
I would utilize visualization in my classroom assignments as much as possible. I know how important using visual aids can be when
teaching certain topics. This can be very useful when teaching science. As a Resource Teacher, I have to be able to teach all subjects
so I get to use it in more ways than just a general education teacher. It also helps because I am a visual learner and need that visual
representation to be able to understand the material and what is expected of me. When we are reading a certain text I ask the
students to visualize what we are reading. In a recent event, I was reading “The Ballad of the Songbird and the Snake” to my class.
One thing that helped the class to visualize the text was seeing the movie. This helped them to be able to see the people as we were
reading it and helped make the story come to life. As a result they were so invested in the material and loved reading the book.
Word Count__175___ /150
How can I remember?
Visualization is a simple strategy to remember. All the teacher has to do is think of a visual that pertains to the lesson
that would help the student remember. This could be a video, picture, doing an experiment, or even going on a walk to
incorporate the material.

Section 2: Information
What do I need to know about this skill/method?
Small group instruction can be difficult for some classes due to class size. Some districts have a certain amount that they consider
small group. In my district it is 6 or less, so all the small groups have to meet this criteria.
Procedure:
The procedure for implementing small group instruction can be simple.
All the teacher needs to do is take the class and split it into groups. The
EDSP 524
groups can depend on what lesson you are learning or how many points
you assign.
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Making smaller groups can lead to more involvement
form the students and more effective teaching.
Some students do not want to be in a small group setting
and can push against it. The small group setting can lead
to more time being spent on a topic. This can be a positive
or a negative.
Why did I choose this strategy?
Where did I encounter this strategy?
I chose this teaching strategy because it is one that I
use daily in my classroom. As a resource teacher I may
have 4 subjects going at one time and small groups
are needed to be able to teach to them all.
I first encountered small group setting from my mentor
who is the certificate teacher at the high school where I
work. I was her TA before I became a teacher, and this is
where I got to see small groups and how beneficial they
can be.

Small Group Instruction
Section 4: Analysis and Implementation
In this section, describe how you would utilize this teaching method in your classroom.
The way that I utilize small group instruction in my class may be different than in general education classrooms. Because I have
students coming in to work on assignments from all different subjects, it is best to group them in small groups. With the help of my
TA, we will have the students in their small groups. My TA will be assisting them in Math while I am reading the text to the students
for their English lesson. Small groups are essential in a class like mine because each student could possibly be working on a different
assignment. There are times when I was assisting another teacher in Math1 class. She would go over the lesson and what she
wanted the students to do and then we would split into small groups to work on the assignment. This helped in a lot of way. I was
able to move around and help the students as she did. It also got the students involved in the material and led them to discussing it
and finding the answers.

Section 2: Information
What do I need to know about this skill/method?
Cooperative learning is an effective method of teaching that enables the students to work together to complete their assignments
and activities, as well as to help each other and learn from one another.
Procedure:
EDSP 524
While utilizing cooperative learning, the teacher will place the students
into pairs. The pairs will then work together on the material and
complete their assignment and or activity.
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Cooperative learning is proven to increase class
participation and is also great for social interaction
amongst all the students.
The only weakness that I see with cooperative learning is
that some students may be hesitant to work with other
students. This may be a hurdle that the teacher will have
to deal with early to have success with this teaching
strategy.
Why did I choose this strategy?
Where did I encounter this strategy?
I chose this strategy because I think it can be a
successful tool in high school. I think it will help
students to work together and learn the material in a
better way.
I encountered this teaching strategy while I was at WCU
pursuing my B.A. It was used in a lot of the Psychology
classes that I took. We would often break into groups for
discussion or on our assignments.
Section 3: Visual, Graphic Organizer or Concept Map
Visual representation of the term/teaching method demonstrating understanding.
EDSP 524
Section 4: Analysis and Implementation
In this section, describe how you would utilize this teaching method in your classroom.
Cooperative learning is a very beneficial strategy that helps student build relationships with their peers and helps them work
together to complete their assignments. I will use this strategy in my classroom by having my students work in pairs. I know that not
every student will be willing to work in pairs, but this strategy can provide an opportunity for the students to learn about each other
and be exposed to different viewpoints and opinions. I will utilize cooperative learning in my classroom by encouraging the students
to pair with a new partner. This will help everyone work with each other and each student will get the benefit of seeing what all the
students are like as opposed to just learning a few of them. Through cooperative learning the peers can assist in helping their
classmate who may be struggling, and encourage another student to complete their classwork. This can be very beneficial.
Word Count__153___ /150
How can I remember?
I can remember cooperative learning by reminding myself that students need to collaborate with each other. It is a
positive experience that will enhance their learning if they participate and try.

Section 2: Information
What do I need to know about this skill/method?
Experiential Learning is a tool that should be used to help students gain experience. This strategy should not be the primary form of
instruction.
Procedure:
Depending on the topic, experiential learning can be beneficial if your
topic can be taught through doing. Completing an experiment, building a
cabinet, or even a trip.
EDSP 524
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Some students learn better through this type of
experience. Some subjects are better suited for this
type of teaching strategy.
Some topics would be difficult t o be taught using this
strategy. Some students do not enjoy the hands-on
approach.
Why did I choose this strategy?
Where did I encounter this strategy?
I chose this strategy because it is one that I like to use
and can see the students that it is beneficial to.
I encountered this type of learning when I was a TA. I was
going to Carpentry class with a student and got to see
them build a bookshelf. You could see how beneficial it
was to the students. They were all engaged and doing
well. They were even helping other students and
encouraging each other.
Section 3: Visual, Graphic Organizer or Concept Map

Section 4: Analysis and Implementation
In this section, describe how you would utilize this teaching method in your classroom.
Because experiential learning is an engaged learning process where students “learn by doing” and then reflecting on the experience,
this is how I would implement it in my classroom rough outdoor group work. I believe that a good way to utilize this strategy would
be in the Agricultural class. This class is a perfect example of hands -on experiences. The students are planting new trees outside in
the courtyard and cleaning out an area where they will have a garden in the fall. All these experiences are helping them in a unique
way. When you are doing a hands-on experiment like this you can really see what students really enjoy this type of learning and
what students would prefer to be at a desk listening to a lecture. Having my students engage in the direct experience will help them
learn as they are experiencing, and it may also help some students learn something about themselves that they did not know.

What do I need to know about this skill/method?
Modeling can be very beneficial in certain subjects like math. It helps to be able to show the students exactly how to do and then
they can try and replicate what you showed them. This type of teaching strategy would be useful when introducing a new topic to t
class.
Procedure:
EDSP 524
When introducing a new topic in class, the teacher will be able to show
the students how to do the assignment or procedure. The teacher will be
able to walk the students through each step of the process and show
them exactly what to do to be able to get the right answer or outcome.
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Modeling helps show the desired outcome to the
students and provides them an example of what to
do.
I think that Modeling is a very positive strategy, and I
cannot think of any weaknesses that pertain to this type
of teaching strategy.
Why did I choose this strategy?
Where did I encounter this strategy?
I chose this strategy because it is very successful, and I
like that it gives the students an example of exactly
what to do to get the desired result.
I encountered this teaching strategy when my district had

Section 4: Analysis and Implementation
In this section, describe how you would utilize this teaching method in your classroom.
In a Resource class like mine, Modeling may be a little different. I am reviewing many different subjects in a class period, so it is
different than if I were to be teaching a math lesson to a class. The way I would use the modeling is still the same. If I were to be
teaching a Math 1 lesson on the Pythagorean Theorem I would use modeling on my white board. I would start by writing the
equation and explaining how to get the answer. Then I would complete the equation by showing each step and explaining how I got
there. This would be an effective way of using the Modeling strategy to teach in my classroom. I could also use Modeling in a science
experiment. The way that each step is shown is modeling and teaching the students what to do. It helps that they can see it done
and it shows them that it is possible and they can do it too.

Section 2: Information
What do I need to know about this skill/method?
Knowing that every student learns differently, finding a way to introduce kinesthetic movement for the students is important. It may
also provide movement for those students who struggle with physicality.
Procedure:
Kinesthetic learning is all about moving. Teachers can incorporate hand
motions, visuals, brain teasers, stories throughout the lesson.
EDSP 524
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Kinesthetic learning encourages students and teachers
to think outside the box. It shows that there are many
ways of earning something. It also shows how
beneficial physical movement is to the body and the
mind.
The only weakness that I can see with this type of teaching
strategy is that it can take more time than the
conventional lesson. It may also take time to come up
with different ways to incorporate movement into the
lessons.
Why did I choose this strategy?
Where did I encounter this strategy?
I chose this because I think it is a great teaching
strategy and I want to bring it into my classroom.
I first encountered this at a TEACH conference last fall.
There was a professor from Mars Hill who specialized in
Kinesthetic Learning. She had us up on our feet and
moving our arms around and it was the best lesson of the
day. I still remember it as my favorite of the conference.

Section 4: Analysis and Implementation
In this section, describe how you would utilize this teaching method in your classroom.
I would implement this in my classroom by making sure that I was able to get my students outside. The school where I work has a
great outdoor classroom that is free for anyone to use. This would be ideal for this type of lesson. It would get the students out in
nature walking around and moving our body and working our brains at the same time. Getting a lesson moving and breaking it up
can help with engagement as well. Studies show that student can only retain about 20 minutes and then they lose focus or interest.
Getting the students up and moving will help them to stay engaged in the material. It can also be good for those kinesthetic learners
who get bored in a traditional classroom, or those who may have ADHD and need to move around. As a teacher, I want to find ways
that help all my students learn.
EDSP 524

How can I remember?
A way to remember this would be to remember how important it is to move our bodies around. If we don’t move we can
lose muscle or atrophy and the same applies to our brain. We need to be moving and working our muscles to grow
them.

What does this teaching method do?
Definition quoted from a source:
Interleaved learning is a form of learning
where different topics are practiced in a
mixed sequence. It is a method that
teaches students to learn concepts in
different ways at different times.
Definition: Interleaving is a process where
students mix, or interleave, multiple subjects or
topics while they study to improve their learning.
It can be used to strengthen long-term memory of
material.

Section 2: Information
What do I need to know about this skill/method?
This strategy can be hard to learn but can be very beneficial once learned.
Procedure:
The first thing that a teacher must do is to decide what material they will
be interleaving. Then the teacher must decide how to interleave the
material and make sure that the material is not too similar or the student
will be confused.
EDSP 524
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
One strength is that Interleaving can improve a
learner’s performance and technical skill.
It is difficult for some students and not everyone will want
to participate. Therefore the teacher must make the
entire class participate.
Why did I choose this strategy?
Where did I encounter this strategy?
I chose this strategy because it was new to me, and I
wanted to learn more about it.
I read about it while researching teaching strategies for
this assignment.
Section 3: Visual, Graphic Organizer or Concept Map

EDSP 524
Section 4: Analysis and Implementation
In this section, describe how you would utilize this teaching method in your classroom.
When using this teaching strategy in the classroom, I would pick 2 lessons that both focus on one skill and interleave them. If I was
teaching a math lesson and my students were learning a couple different mathematical processes, I could interleave practice of the
different types of problems. Basically, weaving the different processes in between each other. This would be much more beneficial
than practicing one problem and then another. Interleaving can also be when a large topic is taken and broken up into smaller
chunks. This can work in math as well. Interleaved can help students remember the material better and retain the information. I
would identify which of my students is benefitting from this teaching strategy and then determine how I can make more lesson
interleaved for them. Utilizing this in my classroom will help my student deepen their knowledge of the material and work on their
long-term memory.
Word Count__152___ /150
How can I remember?
I would remember interleaving by think of the word “Weaving”. This is basically what interleaving teaching strategy is
doing. It is taken multiple different materials and weaving it together to help retain the information.

Section 2: Information
What do I need to know about this skill/method?
Differentiation can take time to implement but it is beneficial to the students that need the specialized instruction.
Procedure:
Differentiation is a way to modify instruction to meet a student’s
individual needs.
EDSP 524
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
This type of learning is great for student who have
IEPs and need that tailored instruction.
Differentiation takes time to implement and requires that
the teachers do more professional development to be
able to implement the instruction correctly.
Why did I choose this strategy?
Where did I encounter this strategy?
I chose this strategy because as a Special Education
Teacher, I would be using this method to teach my
students.
I first encountered this when I got my job as a TA in the
Special Education Department. The EC teacher used this to
modify her lesson to meet the individual needs of her
students.

Section 4: Analysis and Implementation
In this section, describe how you would utilize this teaching method in your classroom.
Differentiation is a common strategy used in academic environment. I encountered this strategy as Special Education TA. Now that I
have my own classroom, it is up to me to make sure that I tailor the lessons to meet the needs of my students. I would utilize task
analysis to help my students understand the material. I would also break the material into smaller chunks that make it easier to
retain. I don’t want them to be overwhelmed by the material and not want to attempt it. I will be there to help them through each
step of their work to support them and model what they need to know. I want them to all learn and excel and helping them achieve
their goals is what I am here for. Knowing that they all learn in different way and need different instruction to be successful is what
makes a good Special Education Teacher and is what I strive to be.
Word Count__160___ /150
How can I remember?
I can remember differentiation by reminding myself to make my lessons, information, and material different and unique
for each student based on their individual needs as determined in their IEPs.

Section 2: Information
What do I need to know about this skill/method?
When peer assistance is implemented in the classroom, students will work with their peers to better understand the material and
provide good feedback for one another.
Procedure:
Students will work in groups of two or with another peer in the class.
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Peer assistance provides good social interaction for all
the students and also helps with participation
amongst the entire group.
Some students may not want to participate in peer
assistance because they would rather work alone.
EDSP 524
Why did I choose this strategy?
Where did I encounter this strategy?
I chose this strategy because I think it is a good
teaching strategy to use in your classroom. I like that
it gets the students who may not participate or talk to
others to work with someone they may not be familiar
with.
I encountered this strategy while working as a TA in the
school where I currently work. It is a common strategy
that is used in the academic environment on all levels.

Peer Assistance
Section 4: Analysis and Implementation
In this section, describe how you would utilize this teaching method in your classroom.
Peer assistance is a beneficial teaching strategy that helps students to build relationships with their peers as well as provide tutoring
benefits in the educational environment. As a Resource teacher I would utilize peer assistance in my classroom by encouraging my
student to work in pairs. I would also encourage them to pick a partner that they have not worked with yet so that they are getting
to know more of their peers. This will help expose the students to different backgrounds, different cultures, and different opinions.
Through peer assistance, students may be able to see if a peer is struggling and be able to help them. Peer assistance will help
strengthen my students class participation and help wit their ability to receive feedback. It will also help them engage more in the
material and help them become more collaborative learners. All of these can lead to helping students reach a higher level of
achievement.
