Introduction
Music recording is the act of documenting the sound in the most efficient way
possible with available techniques and technologies. It is an essential aspect of the
music industry since through it artists can produce their music and market the same
to the masses. Music recording has had technological developments starting from
the early recording using analogue devices to the increased use of digital devices
by the current generation. The objectives of this course are to introduce the
students to the basic concepts of recording and practical methods to enhance their
understanding and performance in that sector.
Historical Perspective
Early Techniques of Music Recording
Music recording as a process was initiated as early as 1877 by the time when
Thomas Edison invented the phonograph. It recorded sound vibrations in a canister
that either had a metal coating or was made from metal; it had a vibrating
diaphragm with a stylus. Simple as it was, the phonograph paved the way for a
generation where sound could be recorded and played again.
The next invention was the gramophone, created by Emile Berliner in 1887
increased the use of records instead of the phonograph’s cylinder. This enhanced
the quality and the ability to preserve the sounds on a gramophone record hence
