Time to complete this lab was: 1 hour
Module 8 Lab
1. Advanced HTML Encrypt and Password Protect
After reading the instructions for this lab, please compose a 300-word narrative here about your
understanding of AHE&PP. Include a screen shot that shows your protecting as Appendix A
below. Your screen shot needs to include the date/time and something in the shot that
demonstrates you are using your own computer to complete the lab. You can use any HTML
page you want; you can create a page on your own, pull one off the victim website; whatever
makes you happy!
As a reminder, your narrative is not intended to be a book report/article report. No quotation is
allowed in your narrative and plagiarism is certainly not allowed. Please note that 300 words is
the minimum, therefore, please do not submit work less than 300 words. I don’t like to be a
stickler about this but requiring a minimum word count is one way I maintain the minimum
expectation for depth of description/understanding of the subject matter.
Appendix A
This software was a little difficult to understand, but the directions where pretty straight
forward. After installing you then must select a default page, which was listed in the instructions
for the lab. This provides a default page at includes all kinds of different packets. These packets
are all WEP encrypted as they were being routed, which WEP is a kind of network encryption
standard. After that it looks like you enter in the keys, which helps decrypt all the packets that
are WEP encrypted for the sample file. It was interesting getting to see all the different kinds of
packets, and how they looked after being decrypted.
This software could be used by a hacker after they have cracked the network and are
able to get the keys. This would allow for the hacker to see all packets from a location and be
able to read there contain while being routed.
For a network engineer, this could be used inspect traffic and see if the network is being
encrypted by WEP. All modern networks should be using at least WPA encryption if not WPA2.
By changing the encryption protocol, a network engineer can provide more security to a
network. This will prevent sensitive information from being viewed by anyone else besides its
intended target. This product also looks like it can capture packets like Wireshare does, which is
another kind if network monitoring tool. Network engineering could look to see the kinds of
packets that are moving across a network. This could help the see if servers that should be
running are sending packets out correctly. It could also be used to see what kind of services that
server is dishing up to other clients on the network. This program also gives the ability to
capture traffic for later, which is important for network security engineer to analyze. Giving
them to ability to look more into issues after the fact.
