The question answered by researchers was, "What are youth's motivations for using technology,
and how does it impact their daily functioning?" Researchers completed the study by using
consensual qualitative research. The study consisted of ten participants selected from an initial
screening survey that indicated they excessively used technology in some fashion. After
interviewing participants, researchers analyzed transcripts, and two themes emerged. (1) Youth
use technology as their primary source of peer connection. (2) Youth use technology when it is
expected of them. The quotes from the interview inform the theme by revealing why and when
youth use technology.
These themes address the research question by explaining why they use it " I play video games
with my friends each day when I get a chance." and when they use technology, "I have over a
thousand followers on Instagram so I have to post every day, so they keep following me." The
implications of this study for the counseling field are excessive technology use can impact sleep
quality by reducing the amount of time they spend sleeping rather than using technology. For
example, Jeff stated, "My friends always want me to text them or be online even when it is a
school night." It also suggests their motives include peer connectivity. Melissa said, "Most nights
I stay up late so I can group chat with friends. The statement by Melissa suggests that youth use
technology to remain connected to peers, and it may affect sleep quality. When conducting
research, researchers may consider the role technology plays in youth's socializing and the
youth's perception of needing technology, leading to addiction and mood disorders.
