NEFF & MCMINN REVIEW 2
Abstract
This review is based on the book, Embodying Integrating: A fresh look at Christianity in the
therapy room, by Neff and McMinn (2020). This review will explore atonement and how it can
have various perspectives that alter the way an individual sees God and their relationship with
him. Atonement has three emphasized metaphors that include: Christus Victor/ransom theory,
moralistic theory, and satisfaction/penal substitution. These three metaphors will be defined and
explored in the review. Mission will be examined and the different views that are used and how
they have an effect on perspective. Three images that the author included will be discussed and
explained in reference to the Spirit. The book will then be reflected upon along with a spiritual
formation explaining what was taken from the text and how it will be integrated into future
counseling sessions. Various references are used that help to support the review and its contents.
Keywords: God, Jesus, mission, Spirit, atonement, save, perspective, counseling, client
