Body Camera Footage 1:
Before conversing with the suspect, the police on bodycam footage one showed signs of
frustration. It appears that while the officer is explaining what the suspect did, he is speaking in a
frustrated voice, which is fueling the suspect's agitation as well. Throughout the video, I believe both
officers actions seemed excessive. At first, the suspect was until the cop became confrontational,
resulting in a brief foot chase. They dismissed the suspect's repeated allegations that he was unable to
breathe while being imprisoned. While he was confined on the ground, they used a taser on him,
punching him in the face, and pushed his head with force. The subject made no threat to himself, the
public, or the officers. As previously stated, the suspect surrendered to them before attempting to resist
arrest when the officers became aggressive.
Body Camera Footage 2:
At the start of the video, the officer used his training and experience to maintain a friendly and
calm demeanor while attempting to contain the rising issue. The officer's actions in the video were
reasonable, as he used his training and personal experience to assist de-escalate the situation. The
subject represented a threat to himself rather than the police or the public. Instead of attempting to talk
him down, the suspect insisted that the officers shoot and kill him. The officer in the bodycam footage
was constantly calming the guy down so that he did not harm himself or others. The officer stated in the
video that the man merely needed someone to talk to and persuaded the suspect to discuss a family
situation that was hurting him. Eventually, the officer calmed him down and convinced him to obey. I
don't believe the suspect tried to resist or evade arrest because, in the end, he handed over the knife
and gladly allowed the officer to detain him.
Discretionary Biblical Worldview:
Using discretion can be viewed as a sort of wisdom from a biblical perspective. The Bible
frequently mentions the importance of acting with understanding, kindness, and fairness. Instead of just
arresting someone, police should use their discretion to assess issues such as the suspect's intent,
background, and whether they pose a threat to officers' or the public's safety. Instead of the obvious
option of arrest, there are other punishments such as a warning, a ticket, or community service. This
gives the suspect an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. As said in Titus 3; 1-2 it says, “Remind the
people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to
slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.” (New
International Version, 2016).
