Jamie Adams
Ministry Staff Member (Quiz 4: Chapters 13,26,27)
Summary:
This required reading of Ministry Staff Member really focused on dealing with conflicts,
communication, and time and money management. In chapter 13 the book focuses on how to
deal with conflict. It gave several different practical advice and steps on how to handle conflict.
The biggest thing to take away from this chapter is the fact that no one is exempt from conflict.
Chapter 26 focused on communication. It started by stressing how important constant
communication in ministry is. As a leader it states that, “You are responsible to communicate to
your ministry participants the values, vision, purpose, and objectives of the ministry. That will not
happen without you.” (pg.217) The book gave 10 tips on forming more effective communication,
and also stated that communication requires both forethought and after thought. The chapter
closed with four barriers in communication. Chapter 27 focused on the management of time and
money. It first gave the reason to why it is important to manage time and money, and then led to
giving several tips on how to better one’s time and management skills.
Four takeaways:
1.I need to work on my communication tools that I used to people who are involved in my
ministry.
2.When conflict arises I need to focus on dealing with it rather than ignoring it.
3.I need to work on my time and money management both in ministry and outside of
ministry.
4.I need to eliminate Time wasters
Personal Reflection:
I really enjoyed the chapters that were assigned for us to read this section. I think I
mostly enjoyed them because they are all something I definitely need to work on.
First, when it comes to conflict I definitely need to realize that no one is exempt from
conflict. (Even though I would love to never have to take part in conflicts) Secondly, I think
something that is really important in conflicts is something the book mentioned about identifying
the real conflict. I think identifying the real conflict is the best way to find a solution. Third, in
chapter 26 the book dealt with communication. Something in my current ministry that I always
feel like I should do more is with more constant communication to students, parents, and other
staff members. I really liked the section on communication requiring both forethought and
afterthought. I thought that section was pretty enlightening on communication. Last, in chapter
27 it focused on managing time and money. The book gave several great tips of bettering both of
these areas. I definitely feel the section on eliminating time wasters hit me hard. Overall, I really
enjoyed the reading for this section. There was a lot of things in these chapters that I definitely
need to work on and can apply to my ministry.
Integrity Statement:
