funnel, lower room is the assimilation funnel
a. Spoon feed babes as necessary. Don't assume their ability to feed themselves - looks
are deceiving. Make sure the spiritual food is edible or they will reject it.

(feed) the truth. "It's a Sin to Bore a Kid" (Jim Rayburn)
c. A conducive environment. This sets the stage to point the appetite in the spiritual

future church is a two-story house with both a Lower Room and an Upper
Room, and each serves a purpose. A good Lower Room draws people in, but it requires
a good Upper Room to draw people up. Without the Upper Room, the Lower Room goes
nowhere, but a Lower Room that plays its part leverages the advantages of the
institutional church for the kingdom.
it is about engagement in church activity. The Upper Room is the multiplication
funnel—it is about empowerment in mission activity. The assimilation funnel moves from
many to few and the multiplication funnel from few to many. Like the Lower Room itself,
the assimilation funnel can play a useful role in actualizing God's disciple-making vision,
but without something more—the multiplication funnel—it is a dead end; "is not essential
to the church as God has defined it in Scripture, but it is deeply woven into the culture of
most North American nonimmigrant churches that have experienced numerical growth at
some time or another since 1980."
1. Know whether Mancini wants to get rid of the assimilation funnel, leverage it in
tandem with the multiplication funnel, or leave it the way it is and why - Without the
Upper Room, the Lower Room goes nowhere, but a Lower Room that plays its part leverages
the advantages of the institutional church for the kingdom; the two funnels describe two
different patterns of movement
2. Know why Randy Frazee and Jim Putnam critique the assimilation funnel - Randy
Frazee, critiqued how the funnel detached believers from their local contexts of evangelism,
namely their neighborhoods. Jim Putman critiqued the funnel's absence of life-on-life,
relational disciple making.
3. Know which is more important: funnel feeding or disciple making- "If church leaders
are going to step into the Upper Room multiplication funnel, disciple making must be built
into their job descriptions. To make it more than words on a page, enough must be taken out
of their job descriptions to make room for disciple making in their lives.”
4. Know what happens to the funnel when spiritual growth and spiritual activity become
confused with one another - "If church leaders are going to step into the Upper Room
multiplication funnel, disciple making must be built into their job descriptions. To make it
more than words on a page, enough must be taken out of their job descriptions to make room
for disciple making in their lives”
5. Be able to explain how the assimilation model promotes a lack of ownership in
disciple making and places expectations on the organization, not individual- If church
leaders are going to step into the Upper Room multiplication funnel, disciple making must be
built into their job descriptions. To make it more than words on a page, enough must be taken
out of their job descriptions to make room for disciple making in their lives.
6. Know the 100/50/25 funnel on pg. 215 -
7. Know whether Jesus used the assimilation funnel- Yes
8. Know which type of disciples Jesus counted -reproducing disciples
9. Know if the few hearers who were productive were effective enough to compensate
for
the many who weren’t – yes •
10. 14
11. Know how the number of followers Jesus sent out changed (chart) – 5,000:12: 72:
3,300
baptized
12. Know which decisive action Jesus took to reduce his following - by insisting that those
who want an association with him have to eat his flesh and drink his blood
13. Know if the 2 funnels can go hand in hand or contradict each other - Jesus's example
also suggests that the multiplication funnel does not contradict attractional ministry—in fact,
when the priority is in the right place, the two go hand in hand.
14. Know how losing the crowd effected the ministry of Jesus -
15. Know how Mancini describes the church of Jesus
While the whole sample of churches presents a
range of percentages, we have found that typically about 50 percent of those who attend
also connect. Likewise, about half of those who connect—25 percent of the whole—also
serve in the church apparatus on a regular basis. Try as you might to mobilize every
attender, these figures won't budge very far

Tradition: old road // Trendy: Short Road
3. Know what the Jaroslav Pelikan quote says about tradition vs traditionalism
"Tradition is the living faith of the dead, traditionalism is the dead faith of the living..
it is traditionalism that gives tradition such a bad name"
4. Know the key questions to consider in the ministry framework (Scripture, history,
etc.) What does Scripture teach?
What have God's people practiced throughout history?
What is the best practice to reach the culture of our community?
What fruit does our practice of this issue produce?
What is God leading our church to do about this issue?
5. Understand the difficulty of applying seemingly clear Bible principles to our 21st
century church context (remember that the Bible writers weren’t thinking of today’s
hot-button topics like CBD, abortion, transgenderism, etc. when writing the
Scriptures!)
6. In a paragraph or two, summarize your group’s work on the ministry framework in
the last few weeks of class. Include your contributions (Essay Question, 100-200
words) My group discussed a situation where an undocumented person is desiring to
join serve our church. This was a challenging topic, but we came to an agreement. We
would joyfully welcome anyone into our congregation and even encourage them to
join our family. They are absolutely allowed to serve and volunteer, but when it
comes to being joining staff, we would have to ask them to refrain until they have
documents. This is only because we would hate to see them getting in trouble with
officials for serving the
1. Know what the funnels mean, how (if?) they work together, and how this relates to
the two rooms
2. Know the interaction Jesus had with both rooms in the feeding of the 5,000
3. Know who Jesus fed with bread and who he fed with a paradigm
4. Know what Jay Cull said
5. Know how to identify when you are leading a program without practice
church. We understand that scripture instructs Believers to follow and respect the
government set in place, so while we cannot allow them to serve, we use Leviticus 19:34 to
support membership and volunteering.
