Background
To his disciples, Jesus said, “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to
death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me” (Matt. 24:9, ). Christ emphasizedNIV 1
that those who followed him would suffer because of him, basically foreshadowing a major
theme of the Pauline letters: suffering with Christ. The Apostle Paul wrote, “I want to know
Christ- yes to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming
like him in his death” (Phil. 3:10). By expressing this, Paul aligns himself and those who follow
