Biblical Perspective on Healthy Sexuality
The Bible teaches that sexuality is a gift from God that is best appreciated and honored in
the context of a marriage between a single man and a single woman. However, God intended for
us to experience beautiful and fulfilling sexuality but only within the confines of marriage.
Knowing how sexuality is defined in the Bible can help us make moral decisions and treat our
bodies with the honor and respect they deserve. Genesis (1:27-28, NIV) states, "So God created
man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
And God blessed them. And God said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase the number; fill the earth
and subdue it.'" As stated in Solomon's Song of Songs, marriage was based on love between a
man and a woman and how wonderful the gift of sexuality and the love God gave is. In a married
relationship, having sex is expected and encouraged. Procreation, unity, and pleasure are the
goals of sex. The Bible assumes a healthy passion and supports the idea of sexual pleasure. God's
image is reflected in the sexual relationship in marriage (Penner & Penner, 2003).
When it comes to a healthy view of a person's sexuality, we must begin with a proper
view of sex based on the biblical perspective of sexuality. However, we misuse God's gift of
sexuality, which is the leading cause of a sizable portion of the world's issues. Imagine the kind
of world we would live in if everyone adhered to God's moral laws regarding sexuality. There
would be a significant decrease or end to the following issues: fatherless children, single
mothers, rape, abandoned babies, STDs, AIDS, divorce, pornography, sex trafficking,
homosexuality, and abortions. Most people in the world today have wandered away from God's
Biblical view of sex and have started focusing on sexual desires through social media and
different forms of unhealthy views of sexuality. 1 Corinthians (6:18, NIV) states, "Flee from
sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins
sexually sins against their own body." Therefore, I believe a person should refrain from sexual
sin because it can cause physical and spiritual repercussions and lead to relationship problems,
mental suffering, and separation from God. So, I would explain that God intended for us to
experience sexuality as a beautiful and fulfilling gift that was designed for us, but only within the
confines of marriage. Knowing how sexuality is defined in the Bible can help us make moral
decisions and treat our bodies as the temple God created them to be with the honor they deserve.
