Advantages and Disadvantages
There are various benefits to lay counseling. First off, it offers easily accessible and
reasonably priced assistance to people who might not be able to obtain professional counseling
services because of limited funds or unavailability. Also, lay counselors frequently possess a
thorough awareness of the social and cultural dynamics of their community, which enables them
to offer counseling that is sensitive to cultural differences and meets the needs of their clients. In
addition to providing invaluable peer support, empathy, and understanding, lay counselors can
help people going through comparable struggles feel connected and united.
But there are drawbacks to non professional counseling as well. A notable constraint is
the absence of official training and professional supervision, which could lead to insufficient
counseling abilities, wrong interpretations of psychological problems, or unsuitable
recommendations provided to clients. Lay counselors might not be familiar with mental health
issues or the dangers of practicing counseling without the necessary training. With that, in
informal counseling settings, confidentiality and ethical boundaries might be violated, which
could endanger the clients' wellbeing.
Considerations of Lay Counseling
Maintaining confidentiality is one ethical issue covered in the Sanders text for lay
counselors. Due to informal counseling settings, a lack of knowledge about confidentiality laws,
or pressure from their community or religious context to divulge sensitive information, lay
counselors may find it difficult to maintain confidentiality. Lay counselors may unintentionally
violate confidentiality if they are not properly trained and aware of confidentiality standards,
which could damage clients' trust.

Skills
The Sanders text a number of areas such as the development of counseling skills,
knowledge of ethical principles, crisis intervention methods, and cultural competency where lay
counselor training is necessary. While each of these areas is essential for effective lay
counseling, developing one's counseling skills is by far the most critical. To form a therapeutic
alliance with clients, lay counselors need to possess core counseling abilities like empathy, active
listening, and an overall deep sense of care. Lay counselors may find it difficult to provide
people in distress with effective support if they lack these fundamental abilities. Every client
always wants to feel as if they are being shown love and care by their counselor for a more
helpful overall experience.
Personal Views and Desires
By now in the course, I am aware of the importance and possible advantages of lay
counseling, especially when it comes to giving communities easily accessible support. I would
be uncertain of acting as a lay counselor without the necessary education and oversight, though.
Even though I have a strong desire to help people, I think that receiving formal education and
training in counseling is necessary to ensure that I can support people with complex emotional
and psychological issues in an ethical and competent manner. However, although I really do
enjoy serving others and helping people, at this time I do not plan on being a counselor. I would
love to minister and be a go-to person for any friends and family or anyone who wanted someone
to talk to.
Conclusion
There are benefits and drawbacks to lay counseling, which emphasizes the need of ethical
awareness, appropriate training, and continuing supervision for lay counselors. In order to
