Discussion Thread Three: Job Analysis - The Foundation of HRM
According to Cimini et al., (2023), effective job analysis generally uses methods that
allow for the examination of how workers spend their time, specifically how they spend their
time and how much of their time they spend doing those things. McConnell (2021) states that
expert advice is needed at various times in almost every organization, one way to get this advice
is to hire a consultant (p. 360). As an HR consultant tasked with performing a job analysis for a
local hospital, there are several tools that could be helpful in evaluating the workflow of the
organization. Two specific tools that could be particularly useful are interviews with workers and
job analysis questionnaires. These tools can be helpful due to the complex nature of hospital jobs
and tools like observation not being the right tools for evaluating complex jobs, according to
course lecture content (GreggU, 2023).
According to recent research, interviews are a valuable tool for conducting job analysis in
organizational settings (Strah, 2022). In the field of human resources, job analysis is a critical
process that involves identifying and documenting tasks, responsibilities, skills, and
qualifications required for a particular job (Anyakoha, 2019). According to Anyakoha (2019),
interviews can provide firsthand information from employees who are currently performing the
job or from subject matter experts, making them an effective method for gathering job-related
data. Several recent studies have emphasized the advantages of using interviews for job analysis.
Interviews allow the job analyst to ask open-ended questions and probe for details, which can
lead to rich and contextualized information about the job (Anyakoha, 2019). Additionally,
interviews can be tailored to the unique needs of the organization and the specific job being
analyzed, enabling the job analyst to gather data that is relevant and applicable. Facilitating job
analysis in a complex hospital requires tools that allow for flexibility and agility of process. By
engaging in interactive discussions with employees, the hospital’s consultant can gain insights
into their perceptions, opinions, and experiences, which may not be captured through other
methods. Hospital organizations should strive to understand their jobs and workforce better,
utilizing interviews as part of the job analysis process to yield valuable insights for strategic
human resource management. Proverbs 18:21 states, “Death and life are in the power of the
tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits” (English Standard Version, 2001). This verse
highlights the immense power and importance of communication. It emphasizes that our words
have the ability to bring either life or death and encourages us to use our words wisely and in the
most effective manner. This verse supports interviews as a tool for analyzing complex jobs as it
emphasized the importance of the spoken word.
Questionnaires offer several advantages for gathering job-related data, making them a
valuable tool in the job analysis process (Anyaoha, 2019). Questionnaires can efficiently collect
data from a large number of workers or subject matter experts, enabling broader data collection
compared to other methods, like observation (Anyaoha, 2019). Additionally, questionnaires can
be standardized and structured, ensuring consistency and reliability in the data collected. A major
advantage to utilizing questionnaires for complex job analysis, as is in the hospital setting, is that
they can also be easily administered electronically, allowing for cost-effective and convenient
data collection (Cimini, 2023).
Proverbs 14:23 proposes that “there is profit in hard work, but mere talk leads to poverty”
(English Standard Version, 2001) and this verse reminds us that diligent effort and action are
vital to achieving success. As a hospital organization, it is important to have the right people in
the right roles doing the right things. merely talking or making empty promises without taking
action or putting in the necessary effort can result in poverty or lack of success. In other words,
simply talking about or planning things without taking concrete steps toward their realization
may not lead to positive outcomes. This warning is headed by the hospital hiring a consultant to
ensure that they are not only expressing a desire to provide efficient quality care, but that they
are actually putting in the work to make that happen.
