According to authors Vass, Rigby & Payne, (2017), “The term qualitative research refers
to a broad range of philosophies, approaches, and methods used to acquire an in-depth
understanding or explanation of people’s perceptions” (p.299). Qualitative research is based
upon different thoughts and views from different groups of people using interviews,
observations, and written documents such as newspaper articles, journals and more. “The further
an informant is from being an eyewitness to an event, the more untrustworthy the information
becomes” (Hall, Rousel, 2017, p.33). Our book has broken down qualitative research into five
different types such as phenomenology, ethnography, historical research, grounded theory, and
case study. Three that I will describe are Phenomenology, Historical and Case Study.
Phenomenology research is used by having extended interviews with different individuals
using human interaction discovering incidents in real life experiences. Researchers must look for
people experiencing a real life phenomenon to be studied. The researcher is to become one and
biases with the interviewee and new questions will come about as new information is revealed.
The information is then collected and stored by written note, videotaped or tape recorded.
Historical research is used to help prevent something that occurred in the past from
rehappening. Being able to modify life practices through historical research will prevent
reoccurring events. Such information used could be a biography of a person’s life or literature
from a past event. This type of historical research provide evidence based practices.
Case study is used to research how a determent would be affected if a subject was added
to it. It can be one study or multiple case studies. It can be a group of subjects classified into
one. To collect the data the researcher must be prepared to do what it takes even if its
reexamination of previously documentation. “Data collection ceased once data saturation was
reached, where no new findings emerge in subsequent data collection, within or across cases”
(Paddock, Brown- Wilson, Walshe, Todd, 2018, p.657). This is when a case study begins.
Qualitative research is chosen more often because of personal knowledge gained through
social practices and its framework. “Trustworthiness is used as the central concept in the
framework to appraise the rigor of the qualitative study and is a priority to scholars evaluating
the research” (Hall, Roussel, 2017, p.39). Proverbs 3:21 My son, do not lose sight of these—
keep sound wisdom and discretion. According to Hall & Roussel (2017), “findings from
qualitative research offer rationalization as to why a method is successful, clarify unanticipated
outcomes, and create assumptions and theory” (p.24).
