BIBL 105 -- Old Testament Survey
How Not To Look at the Bible.
I. How Not to Look at The Bible
A. The Bible is a Road Map for Life.
The Bible is not a Roadmap about the path I must choose. Instead the Bible tells
us of the way God choose in order to Redeem us.
B. The Bible is an Instruction Manual for Life.
This perspective has a High view of man and a low view of Jesus.
It assumes:
• We can be Good enough Long enough.
• We can do enough so that God will _________ us.
• Christ’s _______________ _____________ is of no use to us.
C. The Bible is a Book of Heroes & Role Models for My Life.
This perspective does not properly understand the Direction of Scripture.
Scripture points Towards Jesus Christ and
not Toward Me.
II. How to Look at The Bible
A. What is the Bible?
The Bible is Gods Story about his plan to rescue, redeem and restore what was
lost in the fall of humanity through the birth, life death, resurrection, and
ascension of Jesus Christ. It is a linear story that began in a garden and it will
end in a city.
B. The Bible Is God’s Story…
God’s Story: God is the author and central character of His story. (Gods story,
not about us but him)
God’s Story: The Bible is a Book of stories that are woven together to tell one
complete story. (How all the old testament story’s intentionally tell one story)
C. The Bible Is God’s Story About His Plan…. All delicately planned
When we read the Bible, we are reading the plan of God as He works out His will
in the lives of the numerous characters of the Bible. God is not making it up on
the fly. Each story is designed to move the plan forward in a way that glorifies
God and points to Christ.
D. The Bible is God’s Story About His Plan to Rescue, Redeem, and Restore What
Was Lost in the Fall of Humanity…
Rescue: We are lost and incapable of rescuing ourselves. (We can’t help at
all)
Redeem: We have been set free by the completed work of Jesus Christ.
(God not only rescued but then set us free and desires to restore)
Restore: His desire is to restore the relationship and fellowship He had with
human beings in the garden of Eden.
E. The Bible is God’s Story about His plan to Rescue, Redeem, and Restore What
Was Lost in the Fall of Humanity Through the Birth, Life, Death, Resurrection,
and Ascension of Jesus Christ.….
God exchanges the righteous, sinless and perfect life of Christ for our sinful and
unrighteous life.
F. The Bible is God’s Story about his plan to rescue, redeem, and restore what was
lost in the fall of humanity Through the birth, life, death, resurrection, and
ascension of Jesus Christ…
It is a linear story that began in a Garden and it will end in a City (We aren't in
the city yet so it's not done, we are a part of the story)
