THE WORD OF HUMANITY
The Seven Greatest Words of Love – Part 5
“After this, Jesus knowing that all things had
already been accomplished, to fulfill the
scripture, “said, “I am thirsty”, A jar full of sour
wine was standing there, so they put a sponge
full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop
and brought it up to His mouth. John 19:28-29
(NASV)
What do we learn about Jesus in this statement?
We want to learn 3 things about when Jesus said
“I am thirsty”
1. What does this mean about Jesus?
2. What does this mean about the people
around me and their own spiritual thirst?
3. What does it mean about my own spiritual
thirst?
THE THIRST OF JESUS
IT SHOWED JESUS WAS TRULY HUMAN
“Jesus gave up his place with God and made
himself nothing. He was born to be a man and
became a servant. And when he was living as a
man, he humbled himself and was fully obedient
to God, even when that caused his death on a
cross.” Philippians 2:7-8 (NCV)
Some believed he was just a phantom on the
cross or was just one-half man and one-half
God.
(Docetism) (Seems Latin)
(Islam) Believes he was a prophet but not fully
man but just seemed to be God to his followers.
IT SHOWED HE WAS THE PROMISED SAVIOR
“So that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus
said, ‘I am thirsty.’”
John 19:28 (NIV)
All these predictions were hundreds and
thousands of years before they took place.
Over 380 predictions of his coming
Predictions that he would be born in Bethlehem.
Predictions that he would go to Egypt as a child.
Predictions that He would be betrayed by a
friend.
Predictions That He would die on “A tree.”
Predictions that He would die and on the third
day rise again.
“When I was thirsty, they offered me vinegar.”
Psalm 69:21b (TEV)
These predictions are coming 1500 years before
there fulfillment.

The hyssop plant: Was used in the Passover.
“Take a branch of the hyssop plant, dip it into
the bowl filled with blood, and then wipe the
blood on the sides and tops of the doorframes.”
Exodus 12:22 (NCV)
IT SHOWS HOW MUCH JESUS LOVES ME
“God demonstrated his own love for us in that
while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (ESV)
It shows how much Jesus loves me for my sins.
Jesus is suffering for my sins. He is dying on
behalf for somebody else.
We live in a world that is spiritually thirsty.
What do people say when they are spiritually
thirsty?
I am board with life.
I am about to go under
I am unfilled.
My life has no meaning.
Everyone living is spiritually thirsty.
Spiritually thirsty people are looking for
fulfillment many times in goods that do not
provide lasting satisfaction.
THE THIRST OF OTHERS
“The time is coming when I will send famine on
the land. People will be hungry, but not for
bread; they will be thirsty, but not for water.
They will hunger and thirst for a message from
the Lord. People will stagger everywhere from
sea to sea, searching for the word of the Lord,
running here and going there, but they will not
find it. Beautiful girls and fine young men will
grow faint and weary, thirsting for the Lord's
word.”
Amos 8:11-13 (NLT)
1. I SERVE JESUS BY SERVING OTHERS
“‘Lord, when did we ever see YOU hungry and
feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to
drink?’ ...And He will tell them, ‘I assure you,
when you did it to one of the least of these my
brothers you were doing it to me!”
Matthew 25:37-40 (NLT)
Jesus could have served himself with water but
ask for someone to serve him.
2. JESUS NOTICES THE SMALLEST SERVICE
“If you give even a cup of cold water to one of
the least of my followers, you will surely be
rewarded.” Matthew 10:42 (NLT)
Sometimes the smallest act of service is the
biggest.
What are you willing to do to get people into
heaven? It is so easy to become insolated by
our wants and ideas that we can ignore others.

3. THE MOST CHRISTLIKE SERVICE IS TO
ENEMIES
“If your enemies are hungry, give them food to
eat. If they are thirsty, give them water to drink.”
Proverbs 25:21 (NLT)
I am most like Jesus when are showing love to
people who are not like you.
Does your life make people thirsty for what you
have in Jesus?
To be salt and light means that your life makes
someone else thirsty for Jesus.
“You can take a horse water and to make him
drink you can salt the oats.”
We can reach the world for Jesus not by telling
them what we are against but by what we are
for.
We have looked at the thirst of others.
What about your own thirst?
HOW DO I GET MY THIRST SATISFIED?
REALIZE WHAT I’M REALLY THIRSTY FOR
“O God, you are my God, and I long for you. My
whole being desires you like a dry, worn-out,
and waterless land, my soul is thirsty for you.”
Psalm 63:1 (TEV)
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew
5:6 (NIV)
We live in a world that if could ---------------------
If I could just do this ---------------I would be
satisfied
There is no job, house or object that satisfy
you like Jesus.
Idol- Expecting that something can bring me
happiness outside of a relationship with
Jesus.
You were made for your creator and for His
glory.
You were not made for the fulfillment of your
selfness pleasure but for his purpose in you.
REALIZE JESUS FEELS MY PAIN
“He took our suffering on himself and felt our
pain for us... He was wounded for the wrong we
did and crushed for the evil we did. The
punishment, which made us well, was given to
him, and we are healed because of his wounds.”

Isaiah 53:4-5 (NCV)
“Our High Priest understands our weaknesses,
for he faced all of the same temptations we do,
yet he did not sin.” Hebrews 4:15 (NLT)
STOP LOOKING FOR FULFILLMENT
ELSEWHERE
“My people have done two evils: They have
turned away from me, the spring of living water
and they have dug their own wells, which are
broken wells that cannot hold water.” Jeremiah
2:13 (NCV)
Another way to say this is you have turned
away from Jesus and taken measures into
your own hands.
What wells have you dug for yourself that
ended up dry when God had provided Niagara
Falls right behind you.
Jesus always provides more for us than we
could ever provide for ourselves.
The only thing that can ultimately satisfy you
is Jesus.
Sin makes us thirsty but the only one who can
satisfy your thirst is Jesus.
Jesus is still thirsty today. He is thirsty for a
relationship with you.
“On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus
stood and shouted to the crowds, ‘If you are
thirsty, come to me! If you believe in me, come
and drink! For the Scriptures declare that rivers
of living water will flow out from within.’” John
7:37-38 (NLT)
“Jesus said, ‘People soon become thirsty again
after drinking this water. But the water I give
them takes away thirst altogether. It becomes a
perpetual spring within them, giving them
eternal life.’” John 4:13-14 (NLT)
Prayer
Lord Jesus we have sought to satisfy our thirst
though so many worldly things.
Lord Jesus I am going to stop satisfy my own
thirst.
Jesus I am going to trust you to satisfy all my
thirst.
