Biblical Basis Project: Searching in the Jerry Falwell Library
E-books:
1. Start on the main library homepage: www.liberty.edu/library.
2. In the Search Anything bar, click on “All” and choose “Books”
3. You should now see an option for All Books, Print Book, E-books. Select “E-books”.
4. Enter in your search terms and click on “Go”.
Online Bible Commentaries:
It can be helpful to look for general commentaries on your assigned books and then look up the
passages to see what the commentary says about that passage. Below are step-by-step
instructions for locating online commentaries:
1. On the library’s main page, find the search box in the middle of the screen. To the left
of the search box, there is a drop down box that says “All” in it. Change “All” to
"Books.
2. Now there are several options under the search bar on the left. Click on the option for "E-
books."
3. Type in the name of the Bible book that you are wanting the commentary for in the box
and also type in the word “commentary” after the book. For instance, your search may be
"Jeremiah commentary." Click on "Go".
4. You will find a list of e-books that fit the search you just performed.
5. Click on the title of the book you would like to read.
6. The next page may look different, depending on which database is displaying the e-book.
You will always want to find the table of contents and then click on the chapter that you
want to read.
Journal Articles:
Start on the Religion and Philosophy Databases page. I’d recommend beginning with the
following databases:
•ATLA Religion with ATLA Serials Plus
•ProQuest Religion
•Theological Journal Library
An example of your search terms might look like this: ((Jeremiah AND (poor OR poverty)).
Remember to choose the limiter on the side of the page for Scholarly or Peer-Reviewed. Here
is an example of some results from the ATLA database: http://ezproxy.liberty.edu/login?
url =ht t p://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lsdar&bquery=jeremiah+AND+
(+poverty+OR+poor+)&cli0=RV&clv0=Y&type=1&searchMode=Standard&site=ehost-
live&scope=site.)
The Theological Journal Library looks a little bit different, but when you open it up you will
want to look at the right-hand side and you’ll see a link for “Search Journals” or “Search by
Verse”. If you want to try looking for articles relating to specific passages that you’ve identified
you can try “Search by Verse”, or you can use your keywords to “Search Journals”.
