Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh was born in Zundert, Netherlands, on March 30, 1853,
and passed away in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, on July 29, 1890. He began working as an
apprentice (1873–1876) for art dealers in The Hague when he was 16 years old. After
unsuccessful attempts at theology and missionary work, he studied art at the Brussels
Academy before relocating to The Hague late in 1881 to collaborate with the Dutch
landscape painter Anton Mauve. In his early years, he painted three different sorts of
subjects: still life, landscape, and figure, all of which were connected by their allusion to
peasants' everyday lives (such as The Potato Eaters, 1885). Following a brief period of
study at the Antwerp Academy, he departed in 1886 to live in Paris with his brother Theo,
an art dealer. He met Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and other Impressionist
and Post-Impressionists there. He began employing pointillistic, broken brushstrokes and
pure colors by the summer of 1887, and by the start of 1888, his Post-Impressionist style
had fully developed. In February 1888, he traveled from Paris to Arles in southeast
France. His first significant era was represented by the images he produced over the
course of the next 12 months, which included self-portraits, views of the town and its
surrounds, portraits of Roulin the postman and other friends, interior and exterior shots
of the house, sunflowers, and landscapes. Van Gogh and Gauguin collaborated for two
months starting in October 1888, but despite some mutual influence, their working
relationship quickly soured. . After arguing with Gauguin on Christmas Eve 1888, van
Gogh lost his cool under the pressure and severed the lower half of his own left ear. Van
Gogh entered an asylum at the end of April 1889, but he kept painting. During his 12-
month confinement, he produced 150 paintings and drawings. After relocating to Auvers-
sur-Oise in 1890, he experienced another surge of activity. However, he soon
experienced a relapse and passed away in July of that year from a self-inflicted gunshot
wound. Over the course of his ten-year artistic career, he created more than 800 paintings
and 700 drawings, but only one was ever sold. He is regarded as the finest Dutch painter
because of the significant impact his work had on the development of modern painting
