Student Name: _____Stefan Hawkins______________________
1. What is the difference between a low-slope roof and a steep roof? What are
the advantages and disadvantages of each type?
Ans:
A low-slope roof is one whose slope is less than 3:12, or 25%. A low-slope roof is
made up of the deck which supports the roof, thermal insulation, a vapor retarder,
the roof membrane, drainage components and flashings.
A steep slope roof is a roof with a pitch of 25% or greater. Roof coverings for
steep roofs fall into 3 categories: thatch, shingles, and architectural sheet metal.
3.Compare a multi-ply bituminous roof membrane to a single-ply roof
membrane.
Ans:
Bituminous -Requires more on-site labor than single-ply. A built-up roof
membrane is created on the roof surface by laminating overlapping layers of felt
together with bitumen
Single Ply - Single-ply is more elastic than bituminous. Brought to the building
site in the form of sheets of synthetic rubber, plastic, or modified bitumen
manufactured to the desired overall thickness
7. List the major components of a green roof system and describe their
functions.
Ans:
1) Plant materials: selected considering their hardiness, climate, depth of soil,
maintenance

2) Growth Medium: long-lasting and optimal growing conditions are provided by
the growth medium. Important considerations are soil stability and drainage
properties
3) Filter fabric: prevents soil particles from being washed out which also helps the
drains from being clogged
4) Soil restraints: allow free flow of water at the roof perimeter and around drains
and scuppers
5) Drainage layer: provides efficient drainage and aeration below the soil
6) Insulation boards: retain insulating value when wet and is placed above or
below the roof membrane
7) Protection layers: prevent root invasion and are placed over the membrane
8) Vapor retarder: Used to slow down the diffusion of water vapor through a
building assembly.
