Study Guide for Topic: Landscape Design
In this topic, we will be studying how to create sustainable home landscapes. The first
step in this process is to create a design for your landscape. Creating a sustainable
landscape design combines knowledge of both the principles of good design and the
use of artistic elements. Before viewing the video program on landscape design, use
the reading called the Principles of Landscape Design (located in the folder for this
topic) to answer the questions below.
1. Be familiar with the artistic elements that are involved in landscape design including
color, line, form, and texture.
2. Know the difference between analogous and complimentary colors.
3. Be able to define the following terms with respect to the landscape design
principles.
oUnity- belongs togwether, provides coherene to a landscape; it makes
it understandable
oBalance-eqality of visual weight of elements in a composition about a
central axis (symmetrical and asymmetrical
oTransition- the gradual change in landscape in appearance across
space that is achieved by the manipulation of basic design elements of
color, line form and texture
oSpace- relative dimension of an element in a landscape to the
landscape to the composition as a whole
orhythm
ofocalization
orepetition
osimplicity
You are now ready to watch the video program for this section entitled Landscape
Design. Click on the Video program link in the Folder on the course website and watch
the ~ 30 minute programs. At the end of the program, you should be able to answer the
following questions based on information in the program and in the extra reading on
Landscape Design.
4. Why is it necessary to formulate a landscape design before attempting to install
a landscape? What are the steps used to create a landscape design?
Environmental factors change, people use it, functional and ecologically stable
3-step process- 1, develop a set of scale drawing, 2 Make a bubble diagram
drawing, 3 Create the final landscape plan
5. What are some of the common mistakes made by novice designers?
Place plants on a design plan too close together
6. What is the definition of a landscape element and be able to recognize
examples of landscape elements.
7. What is the focal point in a landscape? What are some common focal points?
What is the difference between a landscape accent and a focal point?
Focal pt- used to draw attention to a particular location
8. What is the importance of simplicity in a landscape design?
Avoid a chaotic look, brings clarity and purpose to the design
9. What is the difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical balance? What
is the difference between a formal and informal landscape?
Symmetrical- same objects (mirror images0 are placed on either side of an axis,
asymmetrical- achieved by equal visual weight of nonequivalent forms, color, or texture
on either side of an axis
10. How can a theme be used to provide unity to a landscape design? Why is it
important to match the landscape theme to the style of a home?
11. What are the four artistic elements of landscape design?
Line form color texture
12. What are the primary, secondary and tertiary colors used in landscape?
Primary- red yellow blue, secondary- green orange vioet, tertiary- mix of one adjacent
primary and secondary ie red-orange
13. What parts of a plant contribute to texture? What is the difference between a
fine textured and coarse textured plant?
How coarse or fine the surface of the plant of hardscape material feels/looks, foliage,
flowers, bark and overall branching pattern
Fine- small foliage; thin strappy leaves, tall thin stems, ting dense twings, small
branvhes, long stems, small flowers, wispy and light with a sprawling vining form
Coarse- large leaves,; leaves w irregular dges, bold deep veins, variegated colors, thick
twigs and branches, leaves and twigs with thorns,
14. How can color and texture be used in a landscape to make small spaces
appear larger and large space appear more intimate? How can color and
texture be used to create an accent or to create transition?
Larger- (texture) locate plants so that the fine textures arealong the outer
perimeter, the medium textures are in the middles and coarse are closest to the
viewer
Focal pts created w bright colors, cool tend to recede and are perceived as
farther away making space feel larger, warm make space feel smaller
15. What is the difference between proportion and scale?
Proportion- size of an object in relation to other objects
Scale- size of an object
16. Why is time truly the fourth dimension in landscape design?
