Child & adolescent counseling week 3
Hi everyone!
Welcome to week 3! Unfortunately I got sick while coming back from my trip last week which pushed me back on some things. I’ll be catching up today but if you need anything additional from me, please let me know! This week we will be working on learning how to assess, diagnose, and treat minor clients. Most of this week will be about beginning to work on your client plan. I recommend reading the chapters in the book as well as taking a look at the course resources, particularly the course reading list.
The primary assignment for this week is to complete the first section of your client plan. You will NOT be completing the entire treatment plan in this assignment. I have added a FAQs document as well as a video from a colleague about the assignment to this announcement, the Ask Your Instructor discussion section as well as the Updates and Handouts section listed under Files. I am also including an assignment template that you are free to use if you want that includes the necessary sections for this week’s assignment. My top tip is to read the FAQ, watch the video, and be sure to look at the assignment rubric while you are working as that is the guide for my grading.
Here are some additional things to keep in mind that I’ve been getting questions about:
· The top question I always get is where are you supposed to get the information to complete the biopsychosocial assessment? YOU are supposed to create the additional client details to have a fully complete and detailed assessment that will paint a full picture of the client, their current and past health, and their family history.
· As you are creating your client cases, be careful about the stories you create and the assumptions you make about both clients’ backgrounds and experiences. The theories from last week’s discussion post can make it easy to try to make assumptions to make a case fit a theory, but children come from a wide variety of backgrounds and can have a variety of influences for their behavior that can include family, religious settings, peer and social groups, media exposure, as well as educational experiences. Particularly for Jared, try to be multiculturally sensitive/aware and think about what all factors could be causing a young African American male to have anger outbursts in a new environment, especially one that may not be reflective of him and his culture.
· To get full credit for the ecomap, make sure to illustrate the relationships between the family and the environmental resources and environmental stressors that impact the family. The ecomap illustrates the family's connections to their external world. Remember that the environment can include Microsystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem, Macrosystem, and Chronosystem. The template is a good starting point as long as you complete all 12 relationships, but feel free to add more details and explain your relationships in the ecomap analysis section of the assessment. Here are some resources that may be helpful:
· Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTjrkFneXr8Links to an external site.
· Website: https://safeguarding.network/content/ecomaps/Links to an external site.
· I am only looking for about 1-2 full paragraphs for each reference on the annotated bibliography.
· You may hand draw your genogram if that makes it easier for you. Please try to create a detailed genogram that includes types of relationships, different circumstances like substance abuse and medical conditions, and a key. Remember that a genogram is not simply a family tree that lists family members. Here's a video that may help if you still have questions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj2Lvp-Y6qo&t=72s, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92MrHe312cM
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you this week early in the week as I cannot guarantee that I will be able to respond promptly on the weekend.
