After reading chapter 6 on the cases, types, causes, and the laws of war consider the following prompts, answering each separately:

• Does any particular theory do better than others at both explaining and helping to manage state security? Explain why or why not. 

• Why does theory matter when discussing the causes of war? If the theory is not necessarily a reflection of reality (or policy), how and why do theories help us manage security?

• Briefly discuss the limits and possibilities of the      “laws of war” as policy—can you identify the conditions of war under which they appear to succeed or fail at limiting abuses?
