Chart: Backlogs
In previous courses within this program, you learned about backlogs and their role in the closing phase of a project. These documents are typically used in hybrid or agile project management. A product backlog is a prioritized list of all product functionalities, gathered by the product owner from various stakeholders. A sprint backlog includes a subset of the product backlog items. It should detail the work to be completed for the functionality to be delivered at the end of the upcoming sprint. Both types of backlogs can affect the project schedule.
Assignment Preparation
On the PM/490 Scenario page, review the scenario from the previous assessments before reading the Week 4 addition.
Review the Project Scope document and the WBS from the Week 2 summative assessment. If you received feedback that indicates corrections were needed to the Week 2 WBS, make these corrections first before continuing to use the WBS for this week. Use the information to complete this assessment.
Assignment Deliverable
Use the Backlogs template to complete the product backlog for the product and the sprint backlog for the upcoming sprint that starts tomorrow. The WBS you created in Week 2 provides critical information and can be used as the starting point for creating the product backlog.
You will refer to and reflect on this assignment in the Week 5 summative assessment.

- To review the components of a product backlog, watch “Backlog Management” in this week’s Learning Activities folder.
- Review the following websites for more information on the backlog and sprint management processes.
Based on the variety of customers and stakeholders involved in this project, along with expected ambiguity in client requirements for the deliverables, the project management office (PMO) decided to use a hybrid project management methodology. This requires following an agile methodology that uses incremental and iterative approaches to gather client feedback throughout the development stages.
In this hybrid approach, the WBS will be used to create the product backlog. At this time, 25% of the deliverables have not been started, 50% are in progress, and 25% have been completed.
