Week 6 Lecture
Leadership, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Strategy
Approaching the three topics for Week 6 requires deep consideration. Leadership constructs strategy and all strategy requires responsibility so that is constructive and not destructive. When going global marketing managers must, not only think about product price, place and promotion, but also the impact that their strategies will have on local communities and countries that they conduct business in.
Xu (2019, February) has found that company executives need to be involved in the corporate social responsibility efforts of their organizations. Such a belief fits with the need for leaders to model the behavior that is expected out of organizational members. Thus employee buy-in can be directly associated with leader participation. Such participation may go beyond donations of money. Donations of time and thus labor or expertise can indicate a higher level of buy-in by the organization and its members.
A resent example of corporate responsibility occurred when Delta Air Lines of Atlanta, Georgia operated relief flights to the hurricane-stricken Bahamas in 2019. Delta delivered 4700 pounds of supplies for the Bahamian peoples and also airlifted 72 of the inhabitants. The relief included food, water and clothing (Yamanouchi, 2019).
Yamanouchi (2019) also reported that Delta employees also participated in unloaded the supplies while assisting Bahamians with boarding the relief flight. A point of awareness is that such aid generates a higher level of brand awareness for any company participating in such corporate social responsibility efforts. In this case citizens should remember the Delta logos when they consider choosing and airline to fly on in the future. The Bahamas is an independent country that, in this case, received direct hands-on assistance from an American company and its employees.
It is very important to always consider which marketing efforts beyond the regular marketing mix creates a favorable global image for the company, its products and its services. Such a thought process includes how every function of the company impacts company image. It should be noted that Delta was able to give the type of help that was immediately needed by a country and its people.
Delta Air Lines actions fit with its social responsibility statement found on its website. The statement is as follows:
Delta believes that its social responsibility lies at the intersection of its core values and core competencies, making a difference where Delta people live, work and fly by giving time, talents and one percent of the company's annual profits (Delta, 2019, para 8).
The social responsibility statement of Delta Air Lines focuses on the company and its members donating time, ability and money to helping others. When the leadership of a company acts in the best interest of society it becomes a function of leaders as stated by Keegan and Green (2020) being “… a proactive steward of the reputation of the company he or she is leading” (p. 548). In constructing global marketing strategies that promote the growth of the company and that meets the needs of the customers of selected countries, leaders of large corporations and even small companies must meet the imperative to proactively commit to acting in a manner that produces good outcomes in our global society.

Hi Teameco, Your paper was turned in late. The Turnitin score was good at 11% Every paper should have an abstract (which is the only thing that appears on page 2 and the rest of the page is left blank and the abstract just states what is found in the paper or basically the titles of each section), executive summary (that starts on the top of page 3 and gives the highlights of the marketing plan and is a type of elevator speech), bold titles throughout the paper, plenty of properly cited visuals (graphics, diagrams, charts, ads) and a labeled conclusion with a properly formatted reference page (the titles for Abstract, Executive Summary and Reference are bold and centered and no colon is used while the titles for all other sections are bold and left justified) and you did include these. You were to summarize some of the Elements in Political, Economic, and Cultural Environments Impacting the Market Opportunity, and Explain some of the obstacles facing Walmart and other foreign retailers in The UAE and these sections should be easy to find in the paper as they are all part of a marketing plan (because you are writing a section each week). Please note that bold titles that match the rubric should appear in the paper. For this paper there should be a section of political and cultural environments, a title for market expansion, a title for the four utilities, and a title for the SWOT section. You were to summarize some of the elements in the selected country's political, economic, and cultural environments which can impact the market opportunity for Walmart's expansion, which you did. You were to discuss a market expansion strategy for Walmart in the selected country and you did. You were to analyze each of the four utilities that Walmart may be creating in the country and explain which one can potentially work as a competitive advantage for Walmart, which you did. You have great visuals in this paper and this is one of the best papers in this class You were to formulate a SWOT Analysis for Walmart.com in the selected country, which you did for The UAE . The SWOT was represented how it was discussed in class on the DQ where we practiced SWOT 1) in a grid, 2) bullets 3) color so that it can be looked at in seconds and assigned for a committee to work on. Feel free to compare your SWOT with the SWOT in the sample paper that is attached. As explained previously, there is a detailed SWOT like you have here in the paper but in the meeting when the team takes there assignments it is in a grid with bullets and this is what each of the teams comes back on their action steps. It is easy for every person in the room to see at a glance. When you do the SWOT for your company really drill down and add detail. Look at the Chamber of Commerce for the country you are using and look specifically at what the local market struggles are. If you are doing The UAE for your final paper look for laws and regulations that might affect your mentor company. Much of what you worked on here can be used in the final paper. Please look at the final paper now and determine what can be plugged into the sections from this and your previous work. Please work together with your classmates in Global Campus Café so you can share research and work as a team as you would in a real work environment. Basically, the final paper is a splice of every paper and every DQ as this is what goes into a marketing plan. In order to have a complete marketing plan you splice everything you have worked on in this class into one paper and then upload that to your Folio (located by clicking on your profile). Just answering the week 6 rubric won't give you everything you need for the marketing plan so please answer week 6 and then add/splice everything together (all 6 weeks of this class will be represented in that final paper). Your final paper will have a SWOT even though the rubric doesn't ask for it. Please have a section where you present it in a grid with color as it would be in an actual marketing meeting. Attached is a sample week 4 paper and please note that the paper is not intended to be perfect or error free, but simply a representation of the elements of the assignment so you have something to compare your work against. One suggestion that I have for you on a personal note is that as you move through the program there will be a lot of week 4 assignments. If you would use the actual name of the assignment that is given in the assignment description, it will be easier for you to go back and find your previous work. The title of the paper is supposed to match the assignment description. Look at the attached sample. Email me your questions. Thank you, Dr. Cigainero
