The diagnosis I have chosen for Kaylin is Alcohol Use Disorder 305.00
(F10.20) Severe In early remission.
Kaylin meets as there is a problematic pattern of alcohol use Criteria A
leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by at
least two of the following symptoms.
1) Alcohol is often taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than
was intended. Kaylin explains how she has been staying after hours
at work and has consumed more alcohol than intended.
2) There is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or
control alcohol use. Kaylin reports that she attempted to cut back
and limit herself to three cocktails per weekend. However, she is not
able to maintain these limits “for other reasons.”
3) A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain
alcohol, use alcohol, or recover from its effects. Kaylin reports that
she has been missing a lot of her classes due to the effects of her
alcohol use. She has failed a course in which has caused her to
retake the course. Kaylin also spends most of her weekends drinking
alcohol.
4) Recurrent alcohol use despite having persistent or recurrent social
or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of
alcohol. Kaylin reports that she and her friends have been arguing
more lately.
5) Important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given
up or reduced because of alcohol use. Kaylin reports that her grades
are dropping because she “feels too tired” to attend class. She has
missed multiple classes because she is working on recovering from
her hangover.
6) Alcohol use is continued despite knowledge of having a persistent or
recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have
been caused or exacerbated by alcohol. Kaylin continues to drink on
weekends and she also continues to drink a “Bloody Mary” in the
