Introduction
This paper will be discussing evidence-based management in great detail. Evidence-
based management will be explained with the analysis of how it applies to health care. Next the
results of the evidence-based management model will be analyzed and the comparison between
evidence-based management and evidence-based medicine will be discussed on how both are
relevant to each other. Collecting data strategies in decision making will result to different
outcomes as well as not collecting data will impact future decisions, this too will be discussed.
The explanation on importance of strategic planning and business intelligence will be addressed
in detail as well.
Explanations of Evidence Based Management
Evidence-based management is an extensive version of systemic review of evidence in a
medical practice. “Evidence-based policy helps people make well-informed decisions about
policies, programmers and projects by putting the best available evidence from research at the
heart of policy development and implementation” (Shemilt, p.2).
Evidence-based management relates to health care in many ways. The components used
in the management process are patient values and preferences, clinical expertise, and best
evidence/research. Evidence based management “Helps clinicians stay current on standardized,
evidence-based protocols. Uses near real-time data to make care decisions. Improves
transparency, accountability, and value. Also care improves because clinicians access to
previously untapped data agreed upon by peers”. (Haughom, n.d.) Evidence-based management
is a tool that is necessary to improve the quality of care administered by medical professionals to
4
their patients. If implemented correctly, the data used will ensure well informed decisions are
being made during the policy development and implementation process.
Analyzation of the Evidence Based Management Model
According the Marr definition of what the EbM model it explains “the EbM model is a
practical framework for the translating of raw data into information and then information into
actionable knowledge”(Marr, p.16) This serves as a tool that allows CEO’s and executives to
review data that has been translated into information that results to a knowledge decision/action.
The EbM model consists of 5 steps which are broken down into the following:
1. Define Objectives and Information Needs- By understanding fully what strategic
aims/goals of the organization are, it allows clear steering for the EbM process.
2. Collect the Right Information- What data do we need to meet our information needs?
First the organization needs to determine if there is already data collected according to
their needs, if so how do they retrieve it? It is highly suggested that organizations collect
both objective and subjective data that turns into information through interpretation.
3. Analyze the Data and Gain Insights- Data has to be analysed and put into context in order
to extract information. Analysis must support the core strategic objectives of the
organization (Marr, p.18-19). After the analyzation of the data then comes the testing to
prove or disprove the hypothesis.
4. Present and Communicate the Information- It is vital to stay in line with the
organizations needs in regards to analyzing data. When presenting and communicating
the information it is important to have clear, informative visuals like graphs, charts and
picto-graphs.
5. Make Evidence- Based Decisions- With the right data, resulting to evidence based
information communicated effectively, it will allow the organization to make well
informed decisions. This in turn will lead to actions based on the EbM Model.
Using the EbM model strategy it will produce results in providing information that it useful and
knowledgeable to make well informed decisions that lead to actions.

The Origins of Evidence Based Management and Evidence Based Medicine
The origin for evidence-based management is based on a combination of management
decisions and critical thinking leading towards their interpretation of the evidence provided to
them. In the 1990’s; the origin of evidence based medicine was defined as a “systemic approach
to analyze published research as the basis of clinical decision making” (Surg, 2005).
These methods are relevant to each other in terms of requiring the correct data and
information to make well informed decisions for the health benefit of an individual or larger
population. Both of these methods make a large impact on the health of the population when
medical professionals and leadership executives collaborate together for the greater good of the
people.
Collecting Data in Decision Making
What is considered the best resource of evidence to utilize when making well informed
decisions is to review recent published results of prospective data and accurate administrative
data of the same jurisdiction.
Systematic searches should be conducted around those parameters that have the largest
influence on model results. Citation searches is a method used to gather evidence. It uses
relevant articles to identify and gather other relevant articles during research. Berry picking is a
term used when a newly identified piece of information redefines the initial question which
results in a useful modifying search strategy.
By not collecting specific data required to make a well-informed decision it will lead to
misleading data which will translate to misleading interpretation and inaccurate information.
With this domino effect, it will cause either a delay in the decision-making process or an
6
inaccurate decision leading to a wrong action. Therefore, it is important that all data necessary is
retrieved and accurately interpreted to provide the best information to lead to a well-informed
decision/action.
Importance of Business Intelligence
Business Intelligence is a concept that typically involves the delivery and integration of
relevant and useful business information in an organization” (West, 2016). This allows the
business to monitor and analyze their current operations and find ways of improvement. When
the organization takes the time to invest into business intelligence it creates transparency and
efficiency in all activities as well as understanding the behavior of their stakeholders thus
improve their products and services based on the information.
Business intelligence shifts the organizations strategic planning greatly. It creates a better
time management where the business is saving time on reporting processes and analytics while
improving productivity. “This ease in information sharing is likely to reduce duplication of
roles/duties within the organization and improve the accuracy and usefulness of the data
generated by different departments” (West, 2016).
