INTRODUCTION
The aim of this chapter is to discuss the sources of data collected, data collection techniques and the
methods of data analysis. This kind of information served as the basis upon which to validate the
research objectives.
Sources of Data
Primary data
The primary data information collected in the field was done by use of cluster, purposive and
systematic random sampling techniques. Cluster sampling was applied in grouping the three
locations and the respective seven sub-locations which border Rimoi national reserve. Systematic
random and Purposive sampling was used to select respondents who were considered the heads of
households and owners of parcels of land. Data from the selected respondents was collected by the
use of structured questionnaires. The questionnaire was structured into four sections with
information/questions on:-
a) Demographic and social economic status
b) Land use practices
c) Effects of land use on wildlife conservation
d) Alternative land use which integrate wildlife conservation
Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Key informants
Three focus group discussions were held in Keu, Kiptuilong and Kamogich locations with an aid a
guiding questionnaire and also six key informants were interviewed
Field observations
Responses from the structured questionnaires was also supplemented with field observations on
various aspects of the prevailing land use, resource use, wildlife movement areas, community
perception & attitude towards wildlife, wildlife benefits and associated conflicts arising from land
use and land tenureship.
Secondary Data
Secondary data was obtained from district land registrar offices of Keiyo north, County council of keiyo
(CCK) and the Kenya wildlife service. Literature from published and un published articles were obtained
from different libraries. Spatial and topographic map sheets of Keiyo administrative unit and that of Rimoi
national reserve was obtained from Map Survey of Kenya (MSK)
Land use imageries
Land use data set imaginaries of Rimoi area from 1983-2010 were down loaded from internet and
analyzed to observe how land use change has been evolving in the area
TARGET POPULATON
In this study, 1366 Households was targeted spreading over seven sub-locations bordering Rimoi
national reserve, as follows;-
