In the animated film, Zootopia, two characters stand out. They are Nick Wilde and Judy
Hopps. Nick Wilde was a known con artist, while Judy Hopps was an amateur police officer
focused on proving herself before her boss. The film is set in a world populated by
anthropomorphic animals. It follows the adventures of Judy Hopps, a rabbit from a rural Bunny
burrow who dreams of becoming a police officer in Zootopia. With the help of a fox con artist,
Judy must stop a conspiracy threatening the city's fragile peace (Debruge,2016). In their
professional relationship, some development processes occur, depicting a change in the character
of Nick Wilder.
It is worth noting that Nick was a con artist. He was disposed to take advantage of
others and was not considerate about cultivating relationships with people. However, when the
conspiracy was discovered, he was able to set aside his agenda and assist Judy Hopps in her
pursuit to unravel the conspiracy. During that period, we witness his social-emotional processes
positively develop as he develops a relationship with the police officer. He can fathom the
importance of a relationship and drops the con artist antics.
Furthermore, his cognitive process changed in that scenario as he could think critically
about the impact of the conspiracy were it to be left uninvestigated. That showed growth and
development in his character, evidenced by the evolving cognitive and social-emotional
processes. The cognitive process allows for critical thinking when faced with dilemmas (Bailey,
2005). In many cases, the outcome is premised on utilitarianism. An individual balances his
needs against those of others. The cognitive process develops when a positive outcome is
achieved at the expense of selfish interests (Federico et al., 1980). The positive outcome
improves relations hence altering the individual social-emotional process.
