For this discussion we were asked to us our own android device or an emulated
android device. I chose to install and download the emulated android device (galaxy
Nexus). I did this only because I have a lot of email addresses and devices connected
to my phone and did not want to add more nor to my phone and possibly risk
messing something up. The email is already on overload with my work email, my
school email, my military email, my personal email, and my kids parental controlled
emails. I went ahead and created a free gmail email account and started to fallow the
instructions as the assignment mentioned using the emulated android device. I opened
the gmail app on the phone then tapped on add another email address. I then tapped
on other and added my newly formed email address, then went to manual setup. From
there we are told to check with your email provider to determine whether to use
POP3 or IMAP. Gmail's Web-based email service runs on the Internet Message
Access Protocol system, but it also offers Post Office Protocol mail server access.
Gmail's IMAP and POP mail servers handle email messages in slightly different ways,
so choose the protocol that works best for the mail programs on your computer or
mobile device and the type of access you require. So I tried both and ran into
problems , it kept saying it had security issues. I looked up methods to solve this and
it said to try none on security but it did not work and I even tried all of the security
options available, none helped. I turned to the internet again because it said it was
unable to connect to the server and it informed me to do it on an actual browser
rather then the gmail app. On the browser it did not give the manual set up option
just the automated option so I caved and went with this option. Though I wasn't able
to connect in the way addressed in this discussion I was still able to log into my
gmail and set up the protocol needed. While doing the automatic protocol setup it
asked me to set up keep me signed in and I checked the box allowing me to stay
signed in. I did not get the chance to send an email to a class mate but I was able
to send one to all my email addresses. If any of my classmates need to test my
address I made is [email protected]. I looked up how to change my server
settings for my account when trying to figure out why my access wasn't working. In
the settings section in your web based google account click the gears icon in the
settings you will have multiple tabs and you click on forwarding and POP/IAMP and
from there you can enable or disable POP3 and IMAP, you then can click save
changes button to implement the changes .Click "configuration instructions" link for
specific setup information for your mail program, including the POP and IMAP
address information. The POP email protocol downloads all email messages from the
mail server to the email program on your computer or mobile device and then
typically deletes the downloaded messages from the server. The changes you make,
such as deleting a read message from your inbox or sending a new message to a
contact, won't show when you access the same email account from another computer
or mobile device unless you have installed additional synchronization software.
Because POP email downloads your messages rather than leaving them on the server,
the system is useful for accessing email while you're offline.
POP3 by default works on 2 ports
Port 110- this is the default POP3 non-encrypted port
Port 995- this is the port you need to use if you want to connect using POP3 securly.
The IMAP email protocol stores all mail messages and email folders on the server, so
that any changes made when you access Gmail on one device also show on any other
device used to check your Gmail emails. IMAP is therefore useful if you need to
access email on multiple computers or mobile devices.
By default IMAP works on 2 ports
port 143- this is the defult IMAP non-encrypted port
port 993- this is the port you need to use if yoiu wanted to connect using IMAP
securely.
Removing an email account is quite simple you have to go to your settings on your
phone or device go to accounts and backups click on accounts click on the account
you wish to remove and there is a button that says remove account click that button
and it will remove the account from your device.Knowing how to do this is very
important because you may have to access your work email and this is the steps to
do so also you may even have to do this for a client one day and it is great
information to know.
It is very important practice this steps because Gmail is a very commonly used email
app on mobile devices. lots of people use the mobile devices to help respond to email
that was sent to them. For example Gmail is very much known to work with android
devices. I have tons experience in such because i have been a android user for my
entire life. This process is second hand to every android user out there and has to be
used into fully work a android device such a cell phone, table, Chromebook/laptop.
These device has the ability to control and filter out multiple Gmail accounts.Gmail
account is used for a lot of other things to such Google Pay, YouTube, Google smart
devices like google mini, hubs Gmail even has it very own Google share drive. This
experience and practice can help further my career as IT Tech because lots of people
in the business world use the mobile devices in order to communicate with other
people via email and knowing how to link the emails to the phone helps keep
communication line open and effective. Why do you think it is important to practice
these steps? How will this experience and other practice experiences help you in your
career?". I've been working in IT for about 4 years, and have gone through the
growing pains of lvl 1 tech. Assisting clients with mobile devices email setups is a
daily routine, that forces you to learn these procedures. One thing i have noticed, is
that no matter which mobile devise OS you come across, the procedure to adding an
email account is practically the same. Setting, Accounts and passwords, Add account,
select type of account, then enter Email, Password and Outgoing and incoming mail
server (This procedure is particular with IMAP and POP3). Exchange makes things
much easier especially because of its active sync feature. The mail difference between
POP3 and IMAP is that POP3 emails are saved locally, while IMAP emails are stored
in a server. Think of IMAP protocol as a RDP protocol, IMAP server is a Hypervisor
that stores many different email (Virtual Machines) which can be accessed by a RDP
Client (Gmail, Outlook) which grabs the content from the server in real time, but its
not stored on the local machine. Gmail and Outlook is an aesthetic file explorer used
as a looking glass in to an IMAP server. Years ago, when I first got an email
account all my email was downloaded onto my computer. I did not understand at that
time the why I was not able to retrieve my email from other computers. Until I
learned the difference between IMAP and POP3. It has been a long time since I had
to remember the difference between them. The main difference between IMAP and
POP3 is the way you can access your email. POP3 stands for Post Office Protocol
Version 3, your email is downloaded directly to your computer and that is the only
way you can access your email. This is good for someone who does not care to see
their email on other devices. IMAP stands for Internet Mail Access Protocol which
when using IMAP, you can view all your email across multiple devices. Now, for me
I prefer using the IMAP because I can see all my email across all my devices. When
I am reading an email on my computer I can pick up where I left off on my phone.
In order to do the task, I created a new Gmail account as I already had an active
Gmail account that I am currently using on my Android device. After this was done,
it was quite simple to do the configurations. I realized that even though both POP3
and IMAP4 are used to connect to the main server for the purpose of readability,
POP3 is locally managed whereas IMAP messages cannot stay on a local device such
as a computer system. Thus IMAP messages can only stay on the server. POP
accounts are able to download the inbox but they do not move the messages to the
computer system of the user. While using the IMAP, the computer of the user is
synced with the email server. The ports for the protocols are POP3/110 which runs on
995 and IMAP/143 which runs on 993. The secure ports for 993 was SSL/TLS.
I was able to add the yahoo mail account successfully and I was also able to send
emails from the newly created account. I was able to go to the settings and manage
the accounts. The Gmail app enabled me to sync the accounts for better use. After
opening up the gmail app, i noticed the "other" option has IMAP in parentheses.
When looking into POP3 and IMAP the main differences are where the message gets
stored. On POP3, the message is saved locally on the device that the message was
sent to, where on IMAP the message gets stored on a server. The ports for IMAP are
143 and 993, though 993 is the more secure port because it is encrypted. POP3 uses
both 110 and 995, 110 being less secure and 995 being more secure due to
encrypting. For incoming mail i use IMAP using port 993. For the outgoing mail,
SMTP is the default, using port 465(SSL) or 587(TLS/STARTTLS). The steps
required are to click on settings, then going to all settings. From there go to
Forwarding and POP/IMAP. You can configure all of your incoming and outgoing
preferences there. To remove an account, open your settings and go to accounts. Tap
onto the account you want to remove and select remove account. This week's topics
were very interesting, i cannot wait to see how much there is to learn as the weeks
progress. I went with adding a gmail account to my phone and I found that I had to
use both POP3 and IMAP to configure my new email account. I followed directions
of manual entry and the gmail.com server auto populated and did not work and after
researching suggested servers I found that for incoming emails pop3 is used
pop.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 995) and outgoing is smtp.gmail.com (SSL enabled
port 465). After plyaing around with the different settings I was able to get complete
set up and I sent a email to myself from an address that I currently use and it was a
success. IMAP is used when one is working across multiple devices. I feel this is
applicable to most peoples usage of email. I access my email on my pc, phone, tablet
and sometimes other peoples devices if mine isn't available. Whereas POP3 is used on
only one device that is handling and processing a large load of emails. The port
number for GMAIL IMAP is 143 unless it is secured with SSL. In which case it is
IMAP over SSL or IMAPS and it uses port 993. POP server uses port 110 unless it
is secured using SSL in which case it uses port 995. I used the server
imap.gmail.com. For the outgoing server i used smtp.gmail.com. Everything setup as
normal but when I tried to send myself an email it failed. I am unsure what I did
incorrectly in the process T_T. To edit server settings and to remove an email account
you would click the circular profile portrait in the top right of the screen. Next you
click manage accounts on this device. Click on the account that you are wanting to
edit or remove. On the following screen you can click "remove account" which will
be a button underneath the account name. To edit the server settings you would click
on the button that says account settings. Click on the name/email address to edit. In
this menu you can edit the account name, your name and the mobile signature that is
attached to the end of sent emails. You can also determine if images auto display
[data usage] you can also set the frequency that the server syncs emails or if it is
synced at all and if you want to auto download attachments [security]. At the bottom
of this menu are the options to change the incoming and outgoing server settings. For
this exercise I used the Gmail app on my phone. Once I got pass the confusion of
trying to add another account to my Gmail it started to come along easier. I like to
think that I am more tech savvy then I am, so I found myself having to reread and
go back and forth more times than I care to admit. Two differences between POP3
(Post office Protocol) and IMAP (Internet access message protocol) is that POP3 is
managed locally and IMAP is managed through a remote sever. Both POP3 and
IMAP use different ports. The port that POP3 uses is 110 and the port that IMAP
uses is port 143. Personally, I feel that it is important to practice these steps because
it allows you to become familiar with how each one operates in case I encounter a
situation where I would have to enter this information manually. I was struggling at
first to understand what I was exactly trying to accomplish here as I already have
multiple accounts linked to my gmail. It took me a minute to understand what I was
trying to accomplish. IMAP is better for use on multiple devices while POP3 is better
for larger scale sending of emails. The pop3 port is 110 and the IMAP port is 143. I
went with the IMAP route as I like to access my emails from many devices and it is
compatible with gmail emails. If you want to change the settings on your account you
will just click the three lines in the top left hand corner and find the settings wheel
at the bottom and change things accordingly. If I wanted to remove an account I
would click my photo in the upper right hand corner which would open a screen that
would show all my linked accounts. From there I would press the "manage accounts
on this device" tab and remove the account I wanted to get rid of from there. I am
not sure how we are supposed to email fellow class mates so I emailed one of my
own emails. I think I got lost or confused somehow since I do not have an Android
phone. I tried doing it on phone but for some reason I couldn't, so I resorted to
trying it on the computer. So first I created another email account but with yahoo.
Then I logged into my Gmail account so I could add my new yahoo email. It asked
if I wanted to link accounts with Gmailify or import emails from the other account
(POP3). So I went with the option to import using POP3. Then it asked to input my
password from my other email but I didn't finish the process of adding my other
account. The reason I didn't go through with the process was that I would have rather
added an account using IMAP. If I am going to have more than one email I prefer to
keep them separate and also want the option of logging into my email from any other
device. And in order to unlink an email you just either do the steps in reverse or just
simply go into settings to select the unlink account options. Well I hope I followed
the assignment properly. It is a pleasure to be in this course with all of you. The two
major differences between POP3 and IMAP4 is this: POP3 is managed locally. IMAP4
is managed through remote server. IMAP server uses port 143 unless it is secured and
using SSL. IMAPS over SSL (IMAPS) uses port 993. A POP3 server uses port 110
unless it is secured and using SSL. POP3 over SSL uses port 995. The main
difference between POP3 (Post Office Protocol) and IMAP (Internet Message Access
Protocol) is that when you use POP3, you can manage your e-mails locally. With
IMAP, you are managing your e-mails on the server. POP3 uses 110, while POP3
over SSL uses port 995. IMAP uses port 143, and IMAPS (IMAP over SSL) uses
port 993. The incoming email server uses IMAPS. I am required to use
imap.gmail.com. The outgoing e-mail server I am required to use will use the SMTP
protocol and requires SSL. To change the server settings for the account I added, I
clicked the navigation button (or hamburger button) at the top left corner of my
screen, and selected “Settings”. I selected the e-mail I had just added, and then I
simply have to select incoming/outgoing server settings to change those settings. To
delete an account, return to settings and select “Manage Accounts” in the dropdown at
the top right corner. You can then select an account and click “Remove account”. It
is important for those employees in any field, including Customer Service, to
understand how to add an e-mail account on a mobile device, and the differences
between IMAP and POP3. Many workplaces allow employees to access their work e-
mail from home, and many are working from home right now and are required to. I
learned how to do this on desktop applications when I was 11. An employee that
understands these basic skills, especially on a desktop with Thunderbird, Outlook, or
Apple Mail will be more valuable than someone that would need extra time to learn
these things. Honestly these steps were like second nature to me , at age 11 I paid all
my grandmothers bills with her online accounts when’s hey became popular . , I set
up each and every email for whatever company she had to pay. I enjoyed doing this
I’ve always been a computer wiz.. but I’m slacking I need more too explore and
school is helping it’s important to practice these steps so that they become second
nature because that’s just the basics everything I learn moving forward will benefit me
tremendously. My task started out with some fun confusion. I first tried to make a
new outlook account. Instead I made a Microsoft account that could not be used as an
email for some reason. Next went to Gmail to try to make a new account. There, I
also ran into issues. My fiancé used her Gmail to connect to our local collage page.
Any time I connected to the Gmail website. It automatically sent me to the login of
her school’s webpage. Since I did not want to have to dig through why this was
happening. I just made a yahoo account. Because yahoo only uses IMAP. It made it
easy to choose between the two. Then used the smtp for outgoing mail. Had no real
other issues but the one Jayuan Moore was having. I am not able to find where
everyone’s emails are. Or how to easily get emails. So I used my fiancé. I sent the
email with no problems. Receiving took a couple minutes for some reason. I did get
it back. To make this easy for anyone struggling with finding emails. Here is the one
I just made . tyler it service at yahoo dot com. Hope I here back from some of you.
Lastly will answer that I believe its important to practice this to be able to learn how
to do. Hands on is better learning then just words on paper. I added an old email that
I no longer use Since I already knew how to manually set up an email in the Gmail
app it was fairly simple for me. The incoming is IMAP with SSL/TLS security. The
outgoing is Smtp with SSL/TLS security. The incoming port is 993 and the outgoing
port is 465. To remove the account on my android phone I went to settings, account
and sync, selected the account I just added and selected remove account. I haven't
messed with an Android for a few years, but I still remembered how to do it even
without the emulator. If I had to this on a Windows phone I think I could do that to.
Adding emails to phones are pretty simple even when you're not tech savvy. I think it
knowing how to add email accounts will be helpful just incase you have a client that
can't figure out what type of protocol to setup if they have to manually set one up. I
also thing think it is important to know just incase you have to add a work or school
email on your phone. I had a little bit of trouble concerning this task. I had to create
a yahoo account, seeing as though I already have a gmail account on my app on my
phone. After creating the yahoo account it was fairly easy to configure, Between the
two protocols. It made me use IMAP for incoming on yahoo and SMTP on the
outgoing. POP is the alternate, but yahoo doesn't support it. The difference between
the two is that one allows you to download into your device and the other strores in
another way. The incoming was sent to port 993. The other secure incoming being
port 995. The outgoing was configured to port 465, and to be honest I don't know the
other outgoing secure port. The incoming server it forced me to was
android.imap.mail.yahoo.com secured with SSL/TLS format. The outgoing was secured
on android.smtp.email.yahoo.com, and was also SSL/TLS security. It added the
account successfully and I think I was able to send an email( I didn't get a response
yet). To change settings, it was easy. The gmail app let me access all of the synced
accounts for easy manipulation, I was also able to remove and old email attached to
my account in just a few steps by going to settings and then manage account. I
folloed prompts to get the task finished. The reason you want to know how to do this
manually, is so you can get a good idea of exactly how the system works. POP3 is
really better if you have a large number of emails and are only using one devices, all
the emails will be saved to that device which can make for faster loading times.
IMAP is used for syncing multiple devices, which is what most providers are doing
now. For instance using google while im signed in on my phone, work computer or
home PC will have everything synced together as if I am just using one device. It is
also great to familiarize your self with what ports you are using especially if you are
going into cyber security.I've been tinkering with Android Studio a little bit before
this class, so this assignment was pretty awesome to get another take on learning
some more basics about it. The emulators are great it did take me a couple tries to
get it working with my AMD processor, but overall it is pretty fun. You can also use
your own phone to test apps. It took a while for me to figure out a way to add
another email to my gmail account because of my pre-existing ones. I used my
Outlook and Gmail account to perform this exercise. The main difference between
POP3 and IMAP, although both of them are ways to connect to the mail server for
readability, IMAP messages don't stay on the local device like a computer, only on
the server. POP accounts downloads the inbox but don't move the messages to your
computer. With IMAP, your computer is synchronized with the email server. The ports
for these two protocols are IMAP/143 (runs on 993) and POP3/110 (runs on 995).
The secure ports for 993 is SSL/TLS.The incoming mail sever I'm required to use is
smtp.office365.com. From the Gmail settings you can select Manage Accounts, select
the account you will like to remove and click on remove account. It's worthwhile to
familiarize yourself with specific IT functions such as email configurations etc. to help
you further your education and experience so that you will be at the top of your field
as an IT professional. Pop3 is post office protocol. It downloads all emails from your
inbox folder onto a singular device. IMAP is an internet message access protocol.
IMAP allows you to access your email on multiple devices from the email server. It
would also send all folders not just your inbox to your devices. It sends a cache copy
to all your devices instead of just one. IMAP allows the folders to synchronize so
when you delete an email from one device it will delete it from all devices. The
secure port for POP3 is 995 and the secure port for IMAP is 993. I am required to
use IMAP for incoming mail and for outgoing I use SMTP. To change server settings
I first go to settings on my gmail account, choose incoming or outgoing depending on
which one I want to change, click on server, and insert the new server. To remove an
email I first go to settings on the device, next I would click accounts, then I would
click on the email I want to remove, after that I click remove account, confirm, and
then exit the settings. The main difference between POP3 and IMAP is that IMAP
allows you to access and manage your account from different devices and POP3 only
allows this from a single device. The secure ports for these protocols are incoming for
POP3 - 995 and for IMAP - 993. Outgoing secure port for both is 465.My incoming
server is IMAP and my outgoing is SMTP. To change my server I can go to my
Gmail settings, choose the account I want to change, choose either incoming or
outgoing, tap on server and enter the new server. To remove the account I added I
would start again in Gmail settings, then tap the 3 dots in the top right corner, select
manage accounts, choose the account to remove, and select remove account.
Practicing these steps as well as practicing other experiences could help in my career
by making sure I am familiar with what I am looking at and giving me a chance to
familiarize myself with different actions before trying to help someone else. Judging
by this week’s discussion question, this is going to be a long 5 weeks. I first created
a new email. I used Yahoo because I saw I was using a Gmail App to install my
new email. I was able to create my new email account and add that email account to
the app on my iPhone with no problems, my problems arose when I tried to send a
email and I could not find an email address of my classmates to send a email to. I
am new to this field and I feel like I am learning and grasping things, but when I am
assigned a task such as this it makes me realize how much I need to do more. In my
research I found that POP3 downloads the email from a server to a single pc, then
erases the email from the server. On the other hand, IMAP stores the message on a
server and coordinates the message across numerous devices. I was able to remove the
account from my app by going through the settings and removing the account from
there. I am new to the IT/Tech field, so any feedback provided is viewed, noted, and
greatly appreciated. I first created a new account at Yahoo.com, as I already have a
gmail account on my iPhone. Then I opened the app and added the email address and
used the IMAP protocol because that is what Yahoo runs on. The main difference
between the IMAP and POP3 protocols is that POP3 is a simple protocol that allows
downloads from your inbox to your local device. IMAP is much more advanced and
allows the users to see all the folders on the mail server. In POP3 mail can only be
listed on one device and with IMAP it can be viewed across multiple devices. It was
required of me to use the Yahoo email server that was suggested. I sent an email to
our classmate, Terrance Gibson. In the settings there was nothing listed to change the
server settings on my app so therefore I would go ahead and remove that email from
the app completely and start over to change the server if need be. To remove the
email from the gmail app, go to settings, select the email you wish to remove and
then select delete. POP3(Post Office Protocol version 3) and IMAP(Internet Mail
Access Protocol) are incoming mail protocols. When using POP3 your manage your
email locally. Your email app connects to an email server and downloads all messages
to your PC that have not been previously downloaded. You can configure your email
client to not delete the original emails from the server for a specific amount of time,
or to not delete them at all. When using IMAP all the business happens on the
server. If you delete a email in a client, the email is deleted on the server as well. If
you log on from another device your the email you deleted wont be visible. When
using IMAP your email client lets you read the emails and even download them for
offline use.
POP3 uses port 110 unless it is secured and using SSL(secure sockets layer). POP3
over SSL uses port 995.
IMAP uses port 143 unless it is secured and using SSL. IMAP over SSL uses port
993
To change server settings on your Android device open your Gmail app>Menu
icon>Settings>click desired account>click incoming/outgoing server settings. You can
then change your incoming or outgoing server and port settings.
To delete an email account from a Android device go to your device Settings>goto
accounts & users>select the Gmail account>tap remove account.
Setting up and removing a email account was straight forward. With more and more
people using mobile devices it is important to understand how to setup and configure
different settings based on usage and security. I think its important to understand that
not every user has the same knowledge regarding their personal devices. Being able to
understand and explain things clearly will be critical to troubleshooting others down
the road. Post office Protocol and Internet message Access Protocol are both a
messaging accessing agent. They arte both used to retrieve messages from the mail
server. POP in my opinion is obsolete compared to IMAP. IMAP allows user to save,
send, and organize multiple files on multiple devices. POP does not allow the user to
do anything but read the emails that have been released from the server. POP3 uses
port 110 and 995 is POP3s, which is the secure port. IMAP uses port 143, and 993,
993 is also IMAPS, which is the secure port. Gmail requires me to use POP, IMAP,
and SMTP. Gmail requires me to use SMTP for outgoing mail. If I want to change
the server settings of the account I just added then I would go to settings and click
the forwarding and POP/IMAP tab and then select enable IMAP, then save changes.
To delete an account you have to navigate to data and personalize, scroll to delete,
then clcik delete the account. Adding and removing accounts has been apart of my
experiences while using any PC or hand held device in general. It is very important
to practice and introduce these principles in all of your online account syncing and
deleting because it is the safer suggested method by the email provider.
