Let me say from my experience as a computer tech / geek I'm the type who would
purchase a new computer. I would not spend the money upgrading an old systems. But
since it's his money and not mine. Let's start with getting rid of that old case.
Lian Li 205 Tempered Glass ATX Computer Case White $69.99
Then I would go all out and get one of the best video cards for gaming.
EVGA’s GeForce GTX 1060 gaming card has new and innovative technology that makes
it the best you're able to get the sub $250 price point. Utilizing NVIDIA’s Pascal GPU
architecture, the GTX 1060 offers excellent performance for the price (and even enough
power to run virtual reality software and performance
Intel Core i7-9700K Coffee Lake 3.6 GHZ Eight-Core
LGA 1151 Box Processor $359.99
Asus Z390 ROG Maximus XI Hero Wifi Call of Duty Black Ops 3 Special Edition
Intel LGA 1151 ATX Motherboard $339.99
WD Black performanace 1 TB 7200 RPM HD 120.00
Kanex Thunderbolt to eSATA USB Adapter 79.00
$1216.00 I have added the RAM Yet.
I would mention to Bob that this upgrade is costing too much.
Let's the HP OMEN Obelisk Intel Core i7 9700k 3.6GHZ
NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super 8GB Gddr6
DDR4-2666 RA<
1TB SSD $1799.99
Firstly, I would suggest to Bob that he buy and use a USB to eSATA port converter in a
USB port on the motherboard so that he can connect the eSATA hard drive to the
computer. Then I would be sure to remind him to configure the drive before saving
any data onto it.
I would let Bob know about about a USB M1-2F converter that can easily be plugged
in to the single USB port and add an additional port.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition found in the top ten at PC Mag is by
far the most expensive graphics card listed for $1,199.00.
1. $105.00 hard drive
2. $5.08 USB to eSATA port converter
3. $3.00 1M-2F USB
4. $1,199.00 graphics card
5. $1,312.08 = TOTAL COST OF UPGRADES
Instead of paying $1,312.08 total in upgrades, I would suggest to Bob that he
purchase a brand new high tech gaming system, such as, MSI Codex R 9SI-001US
Gaming Desktop that already includes a Nvidia graphics card plus numerous USB
ports for a total of $1,199, which actually turns out to be cheaper than upgrading his
old computer himself.
My friend Bob; computer system is 4 years old which means it might have the following spec:
Windows 8 spec in 2016 (Computer / processor= (2GHz) with SSE2 instruction set HardDisk
3GB; Display Graphics hardware acceleration requires a DirectX10 graphics card and 1024 x
576 resolution). After researching graphic cards for DirectX10 and resolution, I thought this
might be a trick questions because I had a hard time finding cards for Directx10 with
1024x576 resolution without wondering what is wrong with this picture.
Bob wants the following:
An external hard drive that has an eSATA interface to the computer to back up and store
entertainment media.
The computer is using onboard video and has an empty PCI Express video slot. What is the
fastest and best graphics card that can be used? How much does it cost?
How would you suggest that he performs the upgrade, and what is the cost?
I believe these items will help Bob accomplish his goal; he isn’t spending a lot of money on
his upgrades and they all should be compatible to what is currently in use. If he decided to
purchase another systems all of these items should become useful even with the newer
system. My only concern with the graphics card upgrade is the Directx10 resolution; if the
specs are a match. All of these items were a purchase suggestion from places that offer
return and two of the items had warranty. The total cost of this project upgrade $116.00; I
added in the cost of shipping 20.00 and that’s how I got this total.
