Answer the following questions based on the Week One PowerPoint presentation.
1. Define art.
1a. Art for me is having the ability to create anything that matters to you. Art is love and life. Art
is something that people use when describing themselves. Art is color, light, materials, paper,
wood. The list could go on and on about this topic and what art truly means. Art has so many
shapes and sides to it and could be described as something that people truly love and care about.
It allows people to express themselves in a different light.
2. Define creativity.
2a. Creativity for me is something that allows you to go out of the box within their art and
themselves as a being. When creating art, you must allow your mind to open to new topics and
ideas and creativity has a major role in how we make art. This is also when you can think of
something that is cool and funky and then make it into art something that people love and can
learn from. Everyone has creativity in themselves, sometimes they just must go a little bit deeper
to find it.
3. What influences a person's definition of art and creativity?
3a. Many things can go into the idea of influencing a person's definition into art and
creativity . After reviewing the online videos I found that everyone's brains are different.
The way people make art is always different. As you create art you can become more
and more inspired to make more art. Something that can influence a person's
perspective within them would be their past and their history of how their life has been
for them. Everyone can be influenced by something that they feel is art and holds power.
4. Describe Dissanayake's theory of making something special.
4a. The Dissanayake theory of making special would be because Dissanayake is trying to show
how art can be turned into a behavior and emotions from seeing and viewing artwork. Trying to
show that art can be more than just materials on paper. From this we can see that Dissanayake
theory can help artists become truer to themselves.
5. Describe the elements and principles of art and design. Include their purpose.
5a. The elements and principles of art and design would be the totality of art and how it is made
and the meaning of art. The elements of art can be shown in how art is made and how it becomes
a real work of art. And the principles of art and design would be to show a natural balance
between art and the artist. From this we can see that the purpose of the elements and principles of
art and design become truer to your artwork you are creating, making sure that the elements and
principles come out into the artwork.
6. Define bias and describe the impact of bias on art making.
6a. Bias is the impact on how others respond to our own artwork and others. People tend to
prefer others' artwork then other artists. Even when you are creating your own artwork you can
still show bias within your own artwork. And is the judgment of art.
7. What is your role in this class and why is it important to know your role?
7a. My role in this class would be to --- and it is important to me because I want to be able to help
younger kids when doing therapy or family counseling. When I was a kid, I was able to use art to
show my emotions and help my emotions come to words. This class would help me with my art
therapy and learn how to understand this type of therapy and how it can help kids and adults. My
role in this class is to soak in as much knowledge as possible while in this course. I really want to
be able to take what we are learning and use it in my future practice.
8. Why is it important to understand bias?
8a. It is important to understand bias because in art we can see a lot of bias and how it is so
common within work. Many artists tend to have a bigger bias than others. It is important to
understand bias when working within art because it can hold the judgment of others and your
judgment.

Application Activity
Select 2 of the 6 art pieces below. For each of the selected pieces, consider how the artist used
the Elements and Principles of Art and Design.
The two artworks I decided to use were “The Mothers” and “Woman with a dead child.”
Answer the following questions for each of the selected images.
1. What is the focal point of the artwork?
The mothers - The focal point of the artwork for the piece, the mothers for me would be showing
the hard part of being a mother. I really felt that this piece went in depth on the idea of the
struggles of motherhood when it first started off.
Woman with dead child - The focal point of the artwork for this piece, woman with dead child I
felt as though, emotionally, this piece was showing significantly higher emotions throughout the
idea of motherhood. This piece really showed a depressive angle onto what it is like with child
loss.
2. Choose 3 elements and 2 principles of art and design for each artwork.
The mothers – Three elements would be pencil, oil paint and colored pencils. Two principles
would be contrast and movement
Woman with dead child – Three elements would be paint, color pencils and oil paint. The Two
principles for this would be value and balance
3. Discuss how the artist used these elements and principles to create their cohesive
piece.
The mothers - When reviewing this piece of art, I had to think about the elements and principles
that went into their piece to create such a beautiful piece of artwork. When thinking, I found that
the mother's artwork showed a lot of oil paint and pencil to capture this artwork. then, when
looking at the principles for creating this piece of art. The artist had to show a lot of emotion and
movements while showing balance of colors and themes
Woman with dead child - When reviewing this piece of art, I wanted to dig deep into the
elements and principles that the artists used when creating this piece of art. when looking at the
topic of elements in this piece of art i saw a lot of oil pastels in a lot of colored pencil markings.
When looking at the topic of elements in this piece of art, I saw a lot of oil pastels and a lot of
colored pencil markings. The artist captured what the feeling was like of losing a child through a
picture. When looking at the topic of principles in this piece of art I felt that it showed a lot of
value and balance being able to show such a strong emotional piece but also being able to show
the light of this.
4. Describe the mood of the piece of art?
The mothers- When thinking of the mood for the piece of art called The Mothers, I thought of a
lot of emotion and a lot of built-up tension within this piece. I thought this piece had a lot going
on and I feel like it was really meant to show that throughout motherhood there is a lot of chaos
that is going to happen. Overall, I felt like the mood of the piece was conveyed as stress.
Woman with dead child - When thinking of the mood for this piece of art called Woman with
Dead Child, I thought that this showed a lot of. Sad emotions throughout this piece. When
looking at the piece, there isn't a lot of color and it's very dark. Through this I could feel very sad
emotions through the piece of artwork. I thought that this piece of art really conveyed what it is
like to deal with child loss.
5. What do you think the artist is trying to convey in the artwork?
The mothers- I think that the artist is trying to convey in the artwork the mothers would be,
Showing the framework of motherhood and how it can be full of light, but there is some darkness
that is thrown into the mix. Good. I also thought that the artist did a very good job at conveying.
The reality of motherhood and how it's not calmed and collected like most think.
Woman with dead child- I think the artist is trying to convey. That they're showing deep
rootedness. Sad emotions through this piece are very dark. And does not have a lot of color in
this piece. Showing a more depressing angle. I thought that this artwork was trying to convey
how infant loss or child loss can affect motherhood and how it can affect everyone related,
showing that it's a dark process.
6. Describe your physical and emotional response to these images.
The mother - When thinking about my physical and emotional response to this image, I found
that my physical response was very taken back and very shocked by the artwork that she was
able to create. when thinking about my emotional response to this image i felt like i had a lot of
sadness and built-up anger towards the image
Woman with dead child - When thinking about my physical and emotional response to this
image, I found that my physical response was very upset when viewing this artwork. Then, when
looking at my emotional response, I felt a lot as what I felt in the artwork called the mothers. I've
got a lot of sad emotions and felt as though this image was able to capture something that was
true and that had happened in their life.
7. Do these images elicit any memories?
●If yes, please briefly describe your memory.
The mothers- When looking back at the piece called The Mothers, I felt like this image did select
some memories for me from my past. It really is. It reminded me of what my mother had to go
through in the early years of motherhood and how it took a big role on her and the people
surrounding. I felt like it was showing the reality of motherhood.
Woman with dead child - When looking back at this piece Woman with dead child, I felt like it
did, kind of. React to some of my memories in my life. My mother had a lot of them.
Miscarriages when trying to have a baby before me and my sister. I felt like I already knew the
pain that she was in but this artwork was able to show the reality of the pain and how hard it
really is.
8. If you could talk to the artist, what questions would you ask her? Why?
The mothers - Some questions that I would have for the artist of the piece called The
Mothers would be how did you create this artwork? What materials and elements did you
have to go through to find this piece of art? I would want to ask this because I feel like
the artwork really showed what it's like to be in motherhood and to be a mother and I'd
want to know how she felt like she showed this correctly.
9. Woman with dead child - Some questions that I would have for the artists of this
piece called Woman with Dead Child would be Did you experience child loss to feel
like you could express your emotions through artwork? I would want to ask this
because I feel like the artwork conveyed such true emotions of child loss. I would like
to know her story and how she created this.
