5-1 Discussion: Bringing Home the Bacon?
Despite residing in a highly industrialized country, the majority of us lead unhealthy lifestyles. The
United States continues to top the world in terms of unhealthy lifestyle choices and obesity, despite
having a semi-great health care system and access to the healthiest foods. For this project, I've made the
decision to concentrate on a vegetarian diet. Although I am not a vegetarian, I have thought about this
in the past. The vegetarian diet has gained popularity recently. Meat, seafood, and poultry are off limits
on the vegetarian diet. Individuals frequently change to vegetarian diets for religious or personal
reasons in addition to ethical concerns like animal rights. Many people choose to become vegetarians
out of environmental concern, as producing livestock contributes to global climate change, emits
greenhouse gases, and uses up a lot of energy, water, and other resources. Vegetarianism comes in a
variety of forms, each with its own set of restrictions.
The Lacto-vegetarian diet allows dairy products such as cheese, milk, butter, and yogurt but forbids
eggs, meat, fish, and poultry. The Ovo-vegetarian diet allows eggs but forgoes meat, poultry, fish, and
other dairy products. The Lacto-ovo vegetarian diets allow dairy and eggs, but excludes fish, meat, and
poultry. The Pescatarian diets allow fish but exclude dairy, eggs, poultry, and meat. The vegan diet
excludes fish, poultry, meat, eggs, dairy products, and foods that contain these products. Numerous
health benefits of vegetarianism have been connected. Actually, research shows that vegans consume
more essential nutrients like vitamin C, fiber, vitamin E, and magnesium. Switching to this diet might be
a good idea if you want to reduce weight (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2023).
Fifteen percent protein, thirty-five percent fat, and fifty percent carbohydrates make up the typical
American diet. The Standard American Diet, which emphasizes red or processed meat, sugary drinks,
sweets, refined carbohydrates, and potatoes, has been linked to obesity. This strategy has also been
linked to a higher chance of diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses. Twenty-seven percent
of a child's daily caloric intake comes from snacks, mostly sweet beverages and desserts. The majority of
Americans do not consume the recommended amounts of fruits and veggies. We could lessen the
ecological effect of the American diet by consuming more fruits and vegetables and less processed meat
and dairy. The chance of heart disease and an increase in bad cholesterol have both been associated
with saturated and trans fats. Limiting animal-based foods like butter, pork, and untrimmed meats will
help keep them away. Including stocked pantry essentials like biscuits and chips. Of course, fat is
necessary. Healthy lipids are abundant in plant-based foods like olive oil, nuts, seeds, and avocados and
are essential for cell growth and energy production (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2023). If you consume anything
other than water most of the time (soda, coffee, juices), you're undoubtedly consuming too many extra
calories and sugar. Health benefits of water have been established. The easiest step to adopting a
healthier lifestyle might be choosing a smaller plate. We can also endeavor to buy locally or even grow
our own fruits and vegetables. Aside from the ethical and environmental advantages of cutting out beef
from your diet, this eating plan may aid in weight loss and improve the flavor of your meals.
