Agile Project Management Approach to General Dynamics UK
Introduction
General Dynamics UK (GD-UK) is a leading defense, security, and information
technology company that delivers mission-critical solutions to customers across the globe. The
organization's continued success requires a project management approach that aligns with its
goals, values, and operational framework. This project proposal outlines a comprehensive
framework that incorporates agile project management principles to improve project outcomes,
increase customer satisfaction, and foster innovation.
Overview of the Current Situation
GD-UK faces a unique set of challenges that require a flexible, adaptive, and customer-
centric project management approach. The company operates in a complex and dynamic
environment that demands speed, agility, and innovation. The organization's projects often
involve multiple stakeholders, complex requirements, and changing priorities. To address these
challenges, GD-UK needs a project management approach that can adapt to changing
circumstances, accommodate evolving requirements, and provide a collaborative and iterative
process.
Analysis of Alternatives
In response to these challenges, GD-UK can consider several project management
approaches, including traditional project management, waterfall, Scrum, Kanban, and Lean.
However, these approaches may not be suitable for the unique demands of GD-UK's projects.
Therefore, this proposal will focus on nontraditional project management frameworks,
specifically agile project management.
Agile Project Management
Agile project management is a nontraditional project management approach that
emphasizes flexibility, customer collaboration, and iterative development. Agile project
management is based on four key principles: individuals and interactions, working software,
customer collaboration, and responding to change. Agile project management leverages adaptive
and iterative processes, such as Scrum, Kanban, and Lean, to deliver value to customers and
stakeholders.
Capabilities and Limitations of Three Nontraditional Project Management Frameworks
The three nontraditional project management frameworks that will be analyzed in this
proposal are Scrum, Kanban, and Lean. Scrum is a framework that emphasizes teamwork,
collaboration, and iterative development. Kanban is a visual project management tool that uses a
work-in-progress (WIP) limit to manage workflow. Lean is a process improvement methodology
that emphasizes reducing waste, increasing efficiency, and delivering value.
Scrum is capable of delivering high-quality software quickly, encourages teamwork and
collaboration, and can accommodate changing requirements. However, Scrum may not be
suitable for projects with highly complex requirements or long-term projects. Kanban is capable
of reducing waste, increasing efficiency, and providing a visual representation of project status.
However, Kanban may not be suitable for projects with highly complex requirements or unclear
priorities. Lean is capable of reducing waste, increasing efficiency, and delivering value to
customers. However, Lean may not be suitable for projects with highly complex requirements or
changing priorities.
My Selected Project Management Approach for this proposal is Agile Project
Management. It is the most appropriate project management approach for GD-UK's project
requirements. Agile project management can adapt to changing requirements, accommodate
evolving priorities, and provide a collaborative and iterative process. Agile project management
leverages adaptive and iterative processes, such as Scrum, Kanban, and Lean, to deliver value to
customers and stakeholders.
As for the Design of the Project Management Framework, the project management
framework for GD-UK's projects will be based on Scrum, an agile project management
framework that emphasizes teamwork, collaboration, and iterative development. The framework
will incorporate the following elements:
Agile values and principles
Scrum roles, events, and artifacts
Continuous improvement processes
Sprint planning, execution, review, and retrospective
Backlog management and prioritization
Customer collaboration and feedback
Incorporating Agile, Scrum, and Iterative Processes
Agile methodology focuses on delivering the project in an incremental and iterative
approach. In Agile methodology, requirements and solutions evolve through the collaborative
effort of cross-functional teams and end-users. The Agile methodology helps organizations to be
flexible and adaptable to changes, thereby providing value to the customer. Scrum is one of the
Agile methodologies that involves cross-functional teams working together to deliver a product
incrementally. For the General Dynamics UK scenario, the Agile methodology would be
beneficial as the project involves the development of complex software systems that require
frequent feedback and changes from the end-users. The iterative process of Agile would enable
the team to develop a minimum viable product (MVP) that could be tested by the end-users and
refined based on their feedback.
Scrum would also be beneficial in the General Dynamics UK scenario as it enables cross-
functional teams to work together to deliver a product incrementally. In Scrum, there are defined
roles, including the Product Owner, Scrum Master, and Development Team. The Product Owner
is responsible for defining and prioritizing the product backlog, while the Scrum Master ensures
that the Scrum framework is followed, and the Development Team delivers the product
incrementally.
The iterative processes in Agile and Scrum would allow for continuous improvement in
the project, enabling the team to adapt to changes and deliver the product incrementally. The
iterative processes also allow for the identification of issues early on in the project, enabling the
team to address them before they become major problems.
Other elements
Apart from Agile and Scrum, other elements of adaptive project management could be
incorporated into the project management framework. These elements include continuous
Improvement which involves that the project team should continually review the project
progress, identify areas for improvement, and implement changes to enhance the project
delivery. Then comes the collaborative team which involves that the project team should work
collaboratively to achieve the project objectives. The team should consist of cross-functional
members who bring their expertise to the project. After that comes communication which is
crucial in project management. The project team should communicate effectively to ensure that
everyone is on the same page. And for the last is stakeholder engagement which is essential in
project management. The project team should engage with stakeholders throughout the project to
ensure that their needs are met.
Defense for Recommendations
The proposed project management framework is designed to address the business
requirements of General Dynamics UK by utilizing a hybrid approach that incorporates elements
of traditional project management and nontraditional project management frameworks. The
selection of this approach was based on the analysis of alternatives, which showed that a pure
traditional or pure nontraditional approach would not be suitable for the project. Traditional
project management approaches have limitations in addressing uncertainty and changes, while
nontraditional project management frameworks may not be appropriate for large and complex
projects. Therefore, a hybrid approach that combines the strengths of both approaches was
deemed the most appropriate for the proposed project. The incorporation of Agile, Scrum, and
iterative processes in the project framework will enable the project team to respond quickly to
changes and uncertainties, while also ensuring that the project is delivered in a timely and
efficient manner. The use of Agile and Scrum will also promote collaboration and
communication among team members, which is essential for the success of large and complex
projects. In addition to Agile and Scrum, other elements of adaptive project management that
will be used include continuous monitoring and evaluation of project progress, risk management,
and stakeholder engagement. These elements will enable the project team to identify potential
issues and address them proactively, as well as ensure that the project is aligned with the needs
and expectations of stakeholders.
Overall, the proposed project management framework is designed to be flexible,
adaptive, and collaborative, while also ensuring that the project is delivered on time and within
budget. By combining elements of traditional and nontraditional project management
frameworks, the project team will have the tools and processes necessary to address uncertainty
and changes, while also ensuring that the project is delivered in a timely and efficient manner.
