The “Amazon Effect” is the disruption of the marketplace by online and digital
companies that uprooted traditional brick-and-mortar stores (Mitchell, C., 2021). This
occurrence has changed the shopping patterns of consumers. With the Amazon Effect,
consumers got a wider variety of options to choose from and often at better prices than
local smaller businesses.)
After the rise of Amazon, 40 percent of small apparel, toy, and sporting goods
makers went out of business along with wit one-third of small book publishers. The
Institute for Local Self-Reliance further has Amazon as the “gatekeeper” as retailers and
brands must sell their products on Amazon’s platform.)
Amazon is also a terrible employer. I’ve worked there. Using the bathroom is
discouraged and the employees are chewed up and spit out. Widely untrained and prone
to accidents managers use fear as a tool to mobilize employees.)
The ethical concerns fall almost entirely on the businesses. Amazon should be
torn apart by the government. Middle-class consumers should be doing their part for
sustainability. Poor people do not have the freedom of choice or the foresight for
sustainability. The guy with the yacht and too much money should be the one worried.
