I selected the L’Oreal company. On their website, they listed their commitments and
responsibilities to our planet, people, and to their products.
They have committed to fighting climate change, preserving our natural resources,
investing in nature …just to name a few. Regarding climate change, they are working to
reduce CO2 emission (Carbon Dioxide.) One way in which they are going to achieve this
feat is by increasing the use of local renewable energy wherever possible.
In 2017, L’Oreal was among the first hundred companies to set Science-Based Targets
(SBT). ‘Science-Based Target’ is a joint initiative by CDP, UN Global Compact, WWF,
and WRI that enables businesses to take swift climate action by setting ambitious
emissions reduction targets.
Their climate change objective for 2030 is to align their greenhouse gas emissions to the
+1.5°C scenario, meaning they will reduce by 50% per finished product all their
greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve this, L’Oreal has set numerical targets for every
aspect of their activities to include not only their production and distribution facilities but
also the raw material supply chain and the indirect impacts associated with the use of their
products by their final consumers.
I do think that the business risks that L’Oreal is taking concerning sustainable operations is
worthwhile because as they have stated that consumers are at the heart of their
sustainability drive, and they want to reach the next billion consumers while making a
positive impact on the world.
Sustainability is the best path to take. Each one of us must do our part. We cannot maintain
our quality of life here on Earth as human beings unless we adopt sustainability. This is a
subject that we have to tackle. We can no longer ignore our dire situation.
