favoritism.
My former job in the restaurant business was one recent example of in-group favoritism.
I began my ascent to server status after being hired for the host position. The server staff
is made up of about half new hires and the other half long-term employees. The seasoned
employees had grown close to one another over their extended employment. I was finally
promoted to Server. Because I am younger than the majority of new hires and have
significantly more restaurant experience, I was permitted to join the veteran group of
workers. Our friendships outside of work were clearly divided even though we all worked
together, and the veteran group frequently received preference when it came to
scheduling.
• Describe how as a group member impacted your sense of self acceptance
and identity.
My sense of self and identity were impacted by my acceptance as one of the employees
with a longer tenure, as was my level of confidence at work, internal levels of
responsibility at work, and social activities. Being acknowledged as a veteran at work
gave me the confidence to express my concerns and priorities to my coworkers. Because
I believed I was surrounded by friends, I could be more lawful about my desires and
abilities.
This acknowledgment empowered me to encourage cooperation and establish a seriously
captivating work space. Because it implied that I would behave similarly to the other
