Personality in the Workplace
Personality and the Individual
The results from my Big Five personality assessment indicated high scores in the 93 percentile
for agreeableness, 92 percentile for conscientiousness, and 89 percentile for emotional stability as well
as in the 77 percentile for intellect/imagination and in the 7 percentile for extraversion. Reviewing these
results made me feel validated like someone gets me as they describe my personality perfectly.
Individuals scoring high in agreeableness are more friendly and optimistic in relation to others.
Individuals scoring high in conscientiousness are more careful and diligent. Individuals scoring high in
emotional stability are able to resist impulses, cope with stress, and adapt to change easily. Individuals
scoring low in extraversion are less talkative, more reserved, and more reflective ( . Shiraev, E., 2016)
These results are extremely insightful as to the type of worker I am and why I love the work I do now as
a special education paraprofessional. Scoring high in agreeableness, conscientiousness, and emotional
stability has provided me with a better understanding as to why I have always worked hard and
diligently, focused on solving issues at hand while remaining cooperative and approachable as a team
player. It has provided me with the ability to be efficient and organized as well as kind and
compassionate to others around me.
The type of work setting that may be a good fit for my personality is a school setting as being
high in agreeableness means that I have a greater capacity for empathy, thriving in settings that
promote connection building and positive contributions to the community (Big five personality trait:
Agreeableness, 2023). Additionally, I am cooperative and approachable as I perform well in settings
requiring interpersonal interactions. Scoring high in conscientiousness means that I have high
expectations for myself and am prepared, dependable, ambitious, self-disciplined, tenacious, and
focused. I thrive in settings where I am held to these high standards (Big five personality trait:
Conscientiousness, 2023). As educators in a school setting, we are absolutely held to high standards as it
is our duty to ensure the best quality of education to our students. Scoring high in emotional stability
means that I am optimistic, secure, confident, and evenly tempered. I thrive in work settings that offer
new experiences and utilize my stable, composed temperament (Big five personality trait: Neuroticism,
2023). Being optimistic and evenly tempered allows me to adapt quickly with our ever changing
classroom environment, whether the changes be positive or negative, without being critical or
aggressive towards others and keeping a level head in the process.
The traits that I would seek in my ideal manager would be high in extraversion and high in
emotional stability. Scoring high in emotional stability means the individual tends to be stress-resistant,
confident, calm, and composed as emotional stability influences an individual’s ability to cope with
stress and adapt to change. Scoring high in extroversion tends to be more outgoing and social. These
individuals often exhibit traits such as being energetic, talkative, outgoing, and assertive; often taking on
positions in leadership. In the work setting, it is vital for there to be a sense of balance in all areas and
positions. It is important for those in leadership such as managers to be the ones to set the example for
the rest of the team.
