Early Assessment Process and Treatment for Child Development Problems
Developmental disorders are cognitive, physical, behavioral, or language development
impairments. Examples of these disorders are autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, intellectual and
learning disabilities, as well as hearing and vision impairments. For parents and healthcare
professionals, early recognition of developmental issues/disorders is extremely important. The
earlier the recognition, the more intervention may be able to help the child. In order to provide a
child with accurate assessment and treatment options for developmental problems, we must first
be able to recognize the signs that there is a potential problem. Once it is recognized that a child
may have a developmental problem, it is important that the child’s parents seek advice from the
child’s doctor immediately.
There are also resources available to assist the parents in getting their child accurately
assessed and treated. If the child is under the age of three, then parents are advised to contact the
early intervention agency. If the child is over the age of three, then the parents are advised to
contact their local school district (SNHU A11y Remediated Videos, 2017b). There are also free
resources available for parents to use throughout the process of having their child assessed,
diagnosed, and treated on the CDC website. The CDC website also provides tools such as the
Milestone Tracker App, a digital online checklist, and free additional resource materials to assist
parents throughout the process (SNHU A11y Remediated Videos, 2017b).
