[Jan was raised in an environment that provided cognitive and affective factors that positively
influenced her development as she grew up in a warm and affectionate home with nurturing,
responsive, and supportive parents. Jan's parents provided her with positive reinforcement
which positively influenced her self-esteem which in turn provided her with the confidence
needed to succeed. Because of the loving way in which her parents supported her, Jan
developed secure attachments and was able to gain necessary tools in order to provide the
same type of positive upbringing for her children. Alternatively, Judi's upbringing was not so
positive as she grew up in an emotionally unstable home with authoritarian parents who used
negative reinforcements as a way of punishment. Judi's self-esteem was negatively influenced
causing her to struggle in school and with severe emotional distress as she grew up eventually
finding herself in relationships resembling her upbringing.]
