have been on the negative end of a gender-biased opinion at work. I
lost a promotion to a man with less experience than me and the
reason I was told was he "had more leadership qualities" than me. b At
the time I did not think much about it but as I learnt about impliciant
biased I realized that was the true reason I lost the promotion.
Implicit bias is also why this topic is a hot-button topic. Implicit
biases are subconscious so unless they are pointed out, they just
seem like the norm. Sometimes people get upset when you point out
their bias, especially when it relates to the workplace. b Bias in the
workplace can go beyond someone not getting a deserved
promotion. This can lead to someone getting a dress code violation
for their hair or being called rude because of different cultural norms.
