PSY 108 Module Three Activity Template
In the Module Three Activity Guidelines and Rubric, review the Prompt and Supporting Materials
sections. Then answer the following questions. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text
with the relevant information.
1. Is your goal to work in a helping profession or do you work in a helping profession now?
Describe why your goal profession or current profession is meaningful to you. Your response
should be a minimum of 1 to 3 sentences.
My goal is to work in a helping profession, the reasoning behind this is because I am
currently going to school to get my bachelors and eventually my masters in psychology not only
because I want to become a therapist as it has been my dream job since I was a child but
because as an adult I can see how deprived that field of work is on resources when it comes to
helping others who are struggling with their mental health. Becoming a therapist is extremely
meaningful to me because not only have I seen a lot of my family struggle with mental health
issues and have even lost some friends and family to suicide, but I myself have had to fight my
own mental issues in the past and I remember as a child when I started going to see a therapist
It was so hard for me to actually find someone I liked and was comfortable with and that
actually understood me. I want to not only be that safe space for kids and adults but also feel
like I am making a difference in other people’s lives.
2. One of your programmatic course themes is self-care. Which of the strategies for self-care from
the article Recognizing Compassion Fatigue in the Helping Professions are most relevant to you
now as a student or working professional? Your response should be a minimum of 1 to 3
sentences.
Personally, the two strategies that stick out the most to me in the article as a student
and a stay-at-home mom are sticking to your schedule and learning how to say no. The
reasoning behind sticking to my schedule is important to me in self-care because I like to have a
set schedule and when that schedule gets interrupted it tends to bother me and sometimes can
ruin my mood because I don’t like major disruption in my daily life, whether that be having set
times I have to do my reading for school, complete my studying or work on assignments, from
the aspect of being a stay at home mom I have my kids on a very set schedule for food, snacks,
naps, and bedtimes because I believe having a healthy schedule not only helps them but also
helps me know what time a day I can have time to myself. When it comes to learning how to say
no that is a huge struggle I have dealt with in the past because I am the type of person who puts
everyone before myself, but since becoming a stay at home mom and even the concept of
having children to keep my own sanity I have learned to speak up and say no without feeling
guilty, whether that be when my fiancé gets home from work and he wants to go do something
without asking me and just does it because I am the default parent, I now have the capacity to
speak up and tell him no that is not okay I haven’t had time to do certain things or even take 10
minute to myself because our children have been hard to handle. I also think learning how to
say no without feeling guilty is just extremely important as a mom because mom guilt can and
will consume you if you don’t accept you have to make boundaries for yourself even when it
comes to your kids.

3. One of your programmatic course themes is emotional intelligence. How do you currently apply
emotional intelligence skills as a student or working professional? How can it be useful for you
to explore strategies for EI as this course (or the program, if you are a Psychology major)
continues? Your response should be a minimum of 1 to 3 sentences.
I currently apply emotional intelligence skills like relationship management and social awareness
daily in my everyday life when it comes to being a student and a mom and wife. For relationship
management it not only helps me maintain my relationship by knowing how to communicate with
others in my life but is a great skill in helping manage conflict whether that be between my children or
significant other, it also plays a big part into how I am as a student because when it comes to group
discussion it not only pushes me to try to inspire others to see my point of view from my post but try to
put a new perspective in their minds to look at. For social awareness I think it is really important as a
student who is doing online schooling because a lot of the subjects we talk about throughout all my
classes can be a touchy subjects to others and when you are aware of emotions that could be felt during
discussions and posts you make you can not only know how to respond without making others upset but
you are able to respond to your peers in a respectful manner while still trying to understand their
emotions or support their argument. As someone who has never really given EI a thought before taking
this class it has really broadened my horizon when it comes to exploring the strategies EI has to offer. It
has not only showed me how to become a better decision maker and taught me things on my stress
management but has showed me areas that I need to work in to improve myself and my thought
process and life skills.
