Why are you in school?
I am in school to get my bachelor’s degree in Psychology and,
hopefully, a doctorate after that. I want to become a psychologist,
likely clinical.
What are your strengths?
I am a good listener, empathic and kind. I get along well with most
people and make friends easily.
How do you learn best?
I learn best through reading and then repeating whatever skills I have
learned. If it isn’t a skill I can use, I learn by writing about what I have
read or was taught.
What are your skills?
I am skilled at communication and have enough self-regulation to
stop and think before speaking, so I am good at not offending people.
I am organized and good at following directions, but creative enough
that when directions are insufficient, I can devise a way to work
around them.
What skills do you want to improve upon or learn?
I want to learn more self-care skills or improve my existing skills. I am
not great at self-care; I tend to burn myself out all week and then
come home and crash after my last day of work. I currently work four
ten-hour days and have three days off in a row, so I rest a bit on the
weekend, but on the first day, I can do very little.
What are your interests and hobbies?
I’m an avid gamer; I enjoy video games, tabletop gaming, and other
types of games I can enjoy with friends. I like reading; I love delving
into new stories and exploring my world. I also love the outdoors and
camp often.
What problems would you like to address in the world?
I want to address the inequality that many people suffer in our world.
I would love to see all forms of discrimination go away, from ageism
to racism.
Where do you envision yourself in five years?
In 5 years, I may still be working on my degree; my bachelor’s may
take a little longer because I have to work at the same time as going
to school. I hope to buy a home soon, but the cost of living is so high
in the pacific northwest that I may have to move to accomplish that.
Which of the programmatic course themes is most relevant to your
career or goals for personal growth?
•
o Self-care
o Social justice
o Emotional intelligence
o Career connections
o Ethics
Many of the programmatic themes fit in with my career goal.
Emotional intelligence is important in psychology; it takes an
emotionally intelligent person to help others without offending them
or worsening their conditions. With social justice, a psychologist can
research and discover new ways to combat social injustices seen
today; they can help educate those that discriminate and hate others
and help to change their minds. A psychologist also needs to be adept
at self-care; to help others, you must first be in the right frame of
mind. Helping others that are suffering can sometimes lead to
compassion fatigue and burnout; proper self-care can help combat
those issues.
I've attached a picture of my little family because they keep me sane
and make me feel loved, and everything I work for is for them. I hope
everyone can have a wonderful family like mine; no one should be
afraid to live the way best for them, and everyone should be allowed
to love as we do.
