POL 211 Milestone Three
The competition between two of the most noteworthy powers of the world; Russia and the
United States, began long ago during WWII and continues until nowadays. The top of this
competition, or might I say the most emotional and heightened time amid this contention was
what individuals alluded to as the Cold War period. The Cold War between Russia or at the time
Soviet Union and the United States was a war pursued on political, financial, and publicity fronts
and had as it were constrained options to weapons (The Editors of Reference book Britannica,
2017, September 18). The Cold War between the USSR and the U.S. rapidly took place after the
yield of Nazi Germany and the conclusion of WWII. As the U.S. and Britain developed an
indeed more grounded union post WWII, the dominance of the USSR started to unwind.
Numerous of the nations that were freed from Nazi Germany by the Ruddy Armed force amid
WWII had cleared out wing governments introduced by the Soviets post war. The U.S. feared the
lasting Soviet control of eastern Europe and the danger of Soviet-communism taking over vote
based systems in western Europe. On the other hand, the USSR needed to preserve control of
eastern Europe to protect against any conceivable modern danger from Germany. The USSR
moreover was determined to spread communism around the world, basically for ideological
reasons. By 1947, two a long time after WWII, the Cold War came into full influence. What
cemented it was when the U.S. gave help beneath the Marshall Arrange; which was a European
recuperation program; for western Europe. This had brought those nations beneath American
impact, whereas the USSR installed openly communist governments in eastern Europe. Two
control nations, with two totally distinctive sees on belief system; one can see that this was just
the start of bubbling political tension. The Cold War kept going until 1991, but inside those 44 a
long time there were numerous occasions that caused political pressure. With the USSR
attempting to spread communism and the U.S. attempting to spread a vote based system, one can
comprehend how the biggest reason for political pressure was doubt. The USSR thought the U.S.
needed to require over the world its belief systems whereas the U.S. thought the same
approximately the USSR. In each of their viewpoints, they thought they were right and the other
way off-base. Another cause of political pressure between the USSR and the U.S. was the truth
that the Soviets needed to devastate capitalism. The U.S. financial framework is based on
capitalism and the two contradicting variables caused extraordinary pressure. Another cause of
political pressure was the atomic arms race between the two nations. Both nations proceeded to
create and stock their weapons stores with effective atomic weapons. This caused extraordinary
pressure around the world since there were thousands of atomic rockets prepared to fire on both
sides (Smith, R., 2014, May 13). Finally, one vital reason why there was political pressure was
due to what is called intermediary wars. In spite of the fact that the USSR and the U.S. never got
into a physical war with each other, they found elective ways of progressing their cold war plans.
Intermediary wars were wars battled in moment and third world nations in Africa, Asia, the
Center East, and South America. These nations were fight grounds for the philosophies of both
the USSR and the U.S. One side of the nation was affected and supported by the USSR and their
communist sees whereas the other side was supported and impacted by the U.S. and their
philosophies. In spite of the fact that not one or the other of the two capable nations got into a
physical war with each other; they upheld and allowed the side they were affecting with anything
they required counting military bolster and assets to thrust their possess plan. A few of the
clashes that created between the United States and the Soviet Union right after WWII that caused
the start of the Cold War were occasions such as the Press Window ornament discourse by
Winston Churchill at Fulton Missouri in the Walk of 1946. In this discourse Churchill essentially
called out the Soviet Union and cautioned against the development of communist arrangements
of the USSR. Another struggle was the common help of Greece and Turkey in 1947. The
UnitedStates advertised shared help to Greece and Turkey to combat communist guerrilla
strengths (Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Gallery, n.d.). These are fair one or two of the
numerous clashes that created between the Joined together States and the Soviet Union after
WWII.Proxy wars were crucial to the impact of philosophies to other nations from both the
USSR and the U.S. One of the intermediary wars that took put amid the Cold War was the
Grenada intrusion. In 1979 the Caribbean country of Grenada had been represented by a Marxist
bunch called the Unused Gem Development (NJM). This development was driven by Prime
Serve Maurice Cleric. InOctober of 1983, uncompromising components of the NJM that were
disappointed with communist advancement in Grenada, captured and executed the Minister and
after that pronounced military law. President of the United States at the time, Ronald Raegan,
chose to act since he dreaded that Grenada would end up a pawn for the USSR and a conceivable
fueling halt Cuban planes carrying soldiers of fortune to central America. Reagan at that point
requested 7,000 US troops to Grenada in October of 1983 beneath the pardon that the U.S. was
securing US citizens and other civilians. Grenada was a previous space of Britain and President
Reagan gave this arrangement without the assent or clarifications of his intentions to British
Prime Serve Margaret Thatcher (Overthrows and proxy wars, 2015, January 18). This is often an
intermediary war for the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union since the
U.S. utilized its resources and military constraint to anticipate communism in Grenada. The
United States had a realistic theoretical worldview with respect to the intermediary war that took
place in Grenada. The reason it was considered a realist see was since they utilized military
control to urge what they needed. They did not need Grenada to drop to communism so they
landed 7,000 U.S. troops without assent from the Britain Prime Serve. This activity by the
United States shocked numerous other countries. The activities by the U.S. amid the
intermediary war in Grenada indeed caught the consideration of the Joined together Countries.
The 108 member-states of the UN condemned the attack calling it ''a blatant infringement of
worldwide law” (Upsets and intermediary wars, 2015, January 18). By December of 1983,
Americans had expelled the NJM from control and introduced once again a government. All the
activities by the United States amid this specific intermediary war leads to a realist theoretical
worldview.
The Soviet Union or USSR started its rule right after the Russian respectful war in 1921 which
made it the world’s to begin with Marxist-Communist state. The USSR was one of the greatest
and most capable countries within the world. They kept going throughout WWII (1939-1945)
and the complete Cold War (1945-1991). The USSR at long last collapsed in 1991 due to
numerous occasions. The collapse of the USSR was basically due to its economy falling causing
visit deficiencies of nourishment and buyer products. These destitute living conditions for the
normal Soviet citizen slowly but unquestionably began to cause an enormous separation within
the belief system of the country. Amid the 1960s and 70s the USSR Communist Party picked up
a considerable sum of riches and control whereas millions of normal Soviet citizens confronted
starvation. Bread lines were common amid the 1970s and 1980s. The separation between the
affluent and the destitute made backfire, particularly from the more youthful individuals who
denied to embrace Communist Party philosophy. President Ronald Regan disconnected the
Soviet economy from the rest of the world causing the USSR’s oil and gas income to decline
significantly. These occasions caused freedom developments all through the Soviet satellites of
Eastern Europe. In 1989 a political transformation in Poland and other Eastern European states
led to the toppling of the Berlin Divider. By late 1989 the USSR had begun to disintegrate and
come separated at the seams. In 1991 the Communist Party dictators attempted one final time to
pick up control by organizing an upset, but the endeavor was ineffectual. These moved equitable
powers driven by Boris Yelstin to the head of Russian legislative issues. On December 25, 1991
Gorbachez surrendered as a pioneer of the USSR and the USSR at last came to a conclusion on
December 31, 1991 (History.com Staff, 2017). After the drop of the Soviet Union, things did not
fair come to be concordant, the drop of the USSR came about in far reaching chaos. The Russian
economy was at an all-time mood and mass destitution at its most noteworthy. The rise of
hoodlum capitalism led to skepticism of popular government and capitalism. The drop of the
USSR did not influence Russia and Eastern Europe but moreover the complete world. Most of
the communist nations supported by the USSR too felt the blow of the collapse. Nations like
Cuba entered a destroying retreat and numerous of the intermediary wars going on in Asia and
South America were suspended. Indeed Vietnam drove an administration to investigate financial
changes and way better relations with its neighbors and indeed with their ancient adversaries,
America. China's Economy quickened after the fall of the USSR, which afterward catapulted
them to becoming one of the foremost capable nations indeed nowadays. The drop of the USSR
moreover had a gigantic impact within the Center East. The mujahideen of Afghanistan
suspended battling the Soviets and refocused their contempt upon the wanton West (A globe
redrawn, 2009, November 07). This contempt towards the U.S. afterward was dependable for the
September 11, 2001 assaults which turned the world upside down.
The collapse of the Soviet Union had a visionary theoretic worldview. Realist hypotheses might
not depict, anticipate, and analyze the universal community after the USSR collapsed ('17, A. R.,
2017, October 12). Realists anticipated precariousness and struggle would rapidly take place
after the fall of the USSR, however as we know it the forecasts were very off-base. Rather than
struggle and war,the worldwide community showed up to noiselessly accommodate U.S.
authority without endeavoring to adjust American control. More countries have endeavored to
connect the U.S. and the universal arrangement it has made, which reflects a visionary
worldview instead of realist. Worldwide political researchers amid this time confronted
predicaments since the collapse of the worldwide political framework. Amid the Cold War
worldwide political connection researchers leaned more towards the realist hypothesis. Realist
critics such as Kenneth Waltz contended that the adjustment of control between the U.S. and
USSR was the key to the nonattendance of war between major powers ('17, A. R., 2017, October
12). So once the adjustment of the two incredible powers ceased to exist with no major wars
between the two; one can see how this caused disarray for worldwide political connection
researchers. Particularly the ones who contended and supported the side of authenticity. This
affected outside arrangement since no one seemed to anticipate that China, in 2011 would work
perseveringly to liberalize itself and looked for to connect the World Exchange Organization.
Russia has as of late done the same.
The shift from realism to idealism caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union also affected US
foreign policy. In the past two decades, the United States has engaged in "humanitarian
intervention," which is basically the use of force for humanitarian reasons. Together with the
United Nations and the World Trade Organization, the United States has demonstrated its ability
to influence global and regional events. They do this by deploying thousands of peacekeepers
around the world and through the Trade Dispute Settlement Body (WTO, n.d.). The dissolution
of the Soviet Union led to the collapse of the international political system, which had a major
impact not only on the United States but also on the world. When it comes to the Cold War and
the War on Terror, I think there are a lot of similarities between them. First, the Cold War and the
War on Terror sowed panic among the country's population. Whether it is a communist state
seeking world domination through fanatical Islamists trying to spread Sharia throughout the
world; They all have one thing in common, hysteria. Fear followed, and in both wars,
governments played an important role in spreading fear among people. The government tacitly
lumped communists and terrorists together, calling them even tougher enemies. Another
similarity between the two wars is that both involved the United States, and both began with
conflicting ideologies. Finally, the similarity is that the Cold War and the War on Terror have
been longer and deadlier than expected.
The Cold War lasted 45 years and millions died in wars for power in Vietnam, North Korea and
more. The war on terror has been going on since the 1990s, with thousands of deaths in
Afghanistan, the Iraq war, and countless terrorist attacks around the world (Squadron, G., 2017,
October 12). Every action has a reaction; The Law of Cause and Effect applies to almost
everything, including international relations. That said, history always has a big influence on
current politics. An example of this is Harry S. Truman's replacement of Vice President Henry
Wallace on the Democratic ticket. After World War II, President Roosevelt was reported to have
a secret plan on how to negotiate terms with Stalin of the Soviet Union, but he did not have time
to share it with him before his death. When Roosevelt died, Truman, who had little foreign
policy experience, became president. The State Department convinced Truman of the need to
take action to counter the Russian threat. The result was the Truman Doctrine, which was
essentially good versus evil, communism versus democracy. Total Cold War. (25 Moments That
Changed America: Turning Points in the Twentieth Century, undated). Henry Wallace was
appointed Secretary of Commerce by President Roosevelt during his lifetime. Wallace became
the leading voice of progressive foreign policy in the cabinet and believed there was a way to
reach an agreement with the Soviet Union. As soon as Wallace gave his speech, President
Truman kicked him out of his cabinet. The world might be very different today if Wallace, rather
than Truman, had been vice president at the time of Franklin D. Roosevelt's death. The influence
of history always influences current political events.
The scope and practice of international relations are also important. When it comes to
international relations, you have to look at it from a very broad perspective. I say this because
there are many idiosyncrasies when trying to understand international relations. It is easy to
confuse world politics with international politics and international relations; Although the terms
are used interchangeably; Both are separate entities. International politics is the core of
international relations, but the scope of international relations is much wider. Politics between
states is a “struggle for power,” while international relations include political, economic, and
cultural relations between states (P., 2016, September 1). The scope and practice of international
relations is a broad field in which several dimensions play an important role.
I feel that I have some theoretical grounding on international relations in realist theory. I had
always leaned more towards the liberal side of politics, but as I learned more about realist theory,
I began to change my mind on some issues. Realism is a theory that explains why political
relations are the way they are. It assumes that power is the primary goal of political action, both
national and international. It emphasizes the role of states, national interests, and military power
in world politics (Bell, D., 2017, September 14). If I believe that I obtained this theoretical
foundation, it is because it opened my eyes to a more concrete and realistic view of the situation.
