POL 210 Discussion 1
The constitutional framework of the United States was drafted after the founding documents
were reexamined. Federalism was used to achieve a balance of power between the central and
regional administrations. This simply serves as a guide for both parties to adhere to so that no
one speaks or acts inappropriately. The Confederation's Article was failing the system up to this
point since it appeared to let each state fend for itself because there was no structure. In a way,
the Constitution brought the nation as a whole together. Federalism has undergone several
versions in the federal government. At the moment, cooperative federalism is in effect.
The judicial branch, legislative branch, and executive branch make up the three divisions of the
federal government. Each branch of government has its own authority, and there is a system of
checks and balances in place to prevent one one from dominating the others and establishing a
dictatorship. A law can be passed by the legislative branch, but the executive branch has the
authority to veto it. This creates a system where no one branch of government can enact laws,
gain greater power, or exercise total control.
