7-1 Final Project: Critical Essay
I. Introduction
A. Overview
For this essay, I will be analyzing the topic Social Media: Beneficial or Harmful? The
primary article I will be referencing is “Social Media and Mental Health,” by authors Lawrence
Robinson and Melinda Smith. Within the article, the authors emphasize the need for face-to-face
contact to be mentally happy and healthy. Humans are programmed to be naturally social beings,
and for many of us, social media platforms enable us to do just that; socialize. Social media
platforms have its advantages, but there are also downsides. While it may be easier to stay
connected via social media, excessive social media use has been linked to an increase for
loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts. Additionally, the more social networking is
prioritized over in-person interactions, the greater the risk of developing or provoking
psychological afflictions. Many of us rely entirely too much on social networking sites to remain
connected without having to leave home; however, social media can never be a replacement for
real world human connection.
B. Personal Connection
