The three companies I decided to select are Miami-Dade County, Disney Corporation
and the Sierra Club. Miami Dade stuck my interest because of its frequent mentions in the
news because of crime. I have been to Miami several times and it is well known as America’s
number one destination for spring break and for it being the highest populated county in
America. I have never been to Disney. I have always heard wonderful things about it and I
am fascinated about how long Disney has been running. I am very curious on their strategic
plan and how efficient it must be to have it running for as many years as its been running.
Lastly, with the Sierra Club, I would like to learn more on preserving our natural resources
and how to become more involved. Working for a nonprofit, I work with several other
different nonprofits, and a few of them have to do with preservation, whether its land or
historical sites.
Over 20 years ago, Miami-Dade County created its strategic planning and
performance framework. This strategy "cuts across a number of service delivery domains,
including Public Safety, Transportation and Mobility, Health and Society, Neighborhood and
Infrastructure, Recreation and Culture, Economic Development, and General Government
services" (Miami-Dade County, 2012). Miami-Dade encourages each of its departments to
coordinate their efforts with the county's strategic plan and put in place performance
benchmarks to evaluate the results of their services and spot any potential gaps.
Disney was founded and has developed into one of the top "manufacturers and
suppliers of entertainment and information. Using our portfolio of brands to differentiate
our content, services, and consumer products, we seek to create the most original, cutting-
edge, and lucrative entertainment experiences and related products in the world" (About-
Leadership). The strategic goal of The Walt Disney Company is to penetrate new markets
throughout the world by fostering creativity and utilizing cutting-edge innovation to provide
high-quality and entertaining entertainment for families everywhere. They have done that by
expanding into locations such as California and other parts of the world. This has grown the
Disney brand abroad.
Sierra Club is a well-established and prominent grassroots environmental group in the
US. A "global network of volunteers, activists, grassroots activists, partnerships, nonprofits,
and campaigns" has been established, enabling them to reach millions of people nationwide
(Sierra Club). "The objectives of the Sierra Club are to discover, celebrate, and protect the
wild places of the earth; to exercise and encourage the responsible use of the earth's
ecosystems and resources; to enlighten and engage humanity to preserve and restore the
quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out
these objectives," according to the organization's mission statement (Sierra Club).
