Learning Objectives
By the end of this module, you will meet these learning objectives:
Identify metrics used to measure success in an innovative
organization
Discuss the key individual, team, and leadership factors in
an innovative organization
Explain the importance of failure to building innovative
capability
Module Overview
It is very difficult to quantify the potential value of innovations that
can reshape or start new industries, but without potential financial
rewards, organizations frequently choose not to move forward with
innovative projects. Companies also frequently fail to project declines
in their business without consistent improvements or innovations in
their products and services. There are many examples of companies
that chose to stay with the status quo and quickly found many of their
customers choosing their competitors. You will explore methods
organizations can use to more accurately judge the potential for
projects as well as the importance of the projects to the organizations.
Choosing the right innovations to attempt is only the first step in being
a truly innovative organization. You must also be able to effectively
complete those projects. Starting with strong leadership that stresses
the value of innovation, big and small, is a good step in ensuring more
innovative successes. The types of teams that work on new projects
can also be a major source of innovative success and failure. The
ability of project teams to work across departments, sometimes by
working with key individuals in an organization, is a major determinant
in a project’s potential success within an organization. But no matter
how good an innovative team or organization is, it will encounter
setbacks and, potentially, project failures. It is generally up to
leadership or culture whether those failures are viewed as lessons
learned and a step forward for another innovation, or a black eye on
the team. The chosen perspective will also frequently show how
strong leadership’s long-term commitment to being innovative truly is.
In this module, you will learn more about ways to measure success of
innovation projects and the role of leadership and teams in innovation.
