How has your understanding of wellness been enhanced as a result of
analyzing it through the four lenses?
Analyzing wellness through the historical lens has enhanced my
understanding by showing me how the definition of wellness has
changed over time. Analyzing wellness through the humanities lens has
enhanced my understanding of how one's wellness can be improved
through literature, art, music, and dance. Analyzing wellness through
the social sciences has enhanced my understanding of how other
cultures view wellness topics such as mental health/illness. Analyzing
wellness through the applied and natural sciences lens has enhanced
my understanding of wellness by looking at it using the scientific
method. Looking at wellness through all of these lenses has really
provided a "big picture" outlook of wellness; not simply that wellness is
the absence of disease.
What are the potential implications of current discussions about
wellness for the future? You may consider any future you like, such as
the future of your community or the future of humankind.
For my project, I researched mental health specifically in banking. I
discovered that some great strides toward normalizing mental health
issues, talking about them, and breaking down the stigma associated
with mental health issues have occurred. However, more work needs to
be done. When people feel ashamed of their mental health issues, they
may not seek help. This could cost someone their life. In the banking
industry, the burnout, anxiety, and depression is real, so normalizing
self care and work/life balance going forward is paramount in my
opinion.
How do you believe the critical analysis skills learned in this course will
support you going forward personally, academically, and/or
professionally?
I think the critical analysis skills learned in the course will help me
professionally by being able to think outside the box, problem solve,
and be more self aware of my own biases. I think these skills will make
me a better employee and leader in the future.
