Module Overview
Motivating individuals to higher levels of performance can be
accomplished in a myriad of ways. An inspirational leader can create an
innovative, creative environment, one in which organizational
employee’s creativity is unleashed, with their passion for success
propelling themselves and those around them forward. In contrast, a
dictatorial leader can utilize fear and intimidation tactics, attempting to
command obedience to force individuals to attain higher levels of
performance or risk job loss if unsuccessful.
Long-lasting performance improvements, to no one’s surprise, occur
when an inspirational leader motivates others to willingly follow. The
“secret sauce” so many organizational leaders seek is always within
their grasp, provided they are willing to adapt their leadership styles to
attain it. The best leaders are the best coaches, and a well-proven
model for success, the GROW model, is one that maps out the road to
success. Identifying the goal, assessing the reality of the current
situation, identifying the options for positive change, and then creating
the will or way forward is the essence of the GROW model.
One other crucial component of effective leadership is the ability of
the leader to articulate the way forward. The communication style of a
transactional versus transformational leader can be quite different—
although no individual is 100% of one type or the other, but everyone
is a blend of the two. The most effective leaders are those that can
adjust and adapt their leadership style to fit the situation, amplifying
whichever leadership traits are most in need, depending on the
situation.
In this module, you will picture yourself as a leader in the organization,
evaluating the employee survey results using the GROW model
template provided. You will also write a journal entry comparing
transformational leadership with transactional leadership.
