In the past decade, value has become more important in the
healthcare system and innovations in medical practice and the
growing relevance of patient-centeredness have helped raise the
medical community's attention to this notion. According to a
RevCycle article, "Value-based care is a form of reimbursement that
ties payments for care delivery to the quality of care provided and
rewards providers for both efficiency and effectiveness" (RevCycle
Intelligence, 2022). This payment method has developed as a
reasonable alternative to fee-for-service reimbursement, which
compensates providers retroactively for services rendered based on
bill charges or yearly fee schedules.
In my opinion, the government should be in a central position to
issue physician practice guidelines based on cost efficiency. The
government has an essential role in protecting public health and
safety and providing necessary health services. The American College
of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) supports this essential
role of legislation. The federal government created Value-based care
initiatives to reduce healthcare expenditures and enhance patient
outcomes. These payment and care approaches are based on
improving treatment quality while expanding patient access and
accounting for cost at the point of service.
